He initially worked for three years in various menial jobs. Despite these hardships, Dr. Vego remained steadfast in pursuing academic excellence, ultimately establishing himself as an expert in operational art—a niche area that brought him international acclaim.

His educational background laid a strong foundation for his achievements. Dr. Vego earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Modern European History from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., graduating in 1981. Prior to this, he completed a Master of Arts in United States and Latin American history at the University of Belgrade in Serbia in 1973 and a Bachelor of Arts in Modern History from the same institution in 1970. His academic pursuits began even earlier with his enrollment at the Naval Academy in former Yugoslavia at age eighteen, graduating in 1961 before serving as commanding officer (CO) on torpedo boats and gunboats and attending Torpedo Tactical School for one year in 1966.

The trajectory of Dr. Vego's career was shaped by influential mentors, including late Colonel Ted Gatchel, who offered him a transformative opportunity at the Naval War College based on recommendations from late Frank Uhlig, a respected editor at the institution. A prolific author, Dr. Vego has published eighteen books and approximately 360 articles throughout his career, focusing exclusively on professional literature that supports academic curricula rather than fiction or novels. Notably, his book "Soviet Naval Tactics," published by Naval Institute Press in 1992, exemplifies his commitment to rigorous scholarship grounded in historical analysis and practical application. Several of his works have been translated into Chinese and Spanish, extending his influence across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
