A significant portion of Dr. Kounavis's career was spent at Intel, where he was part of a small team of research scientists and architects responsible for developing processor instructions designed to dramatically accelerate the processing of encrypted data. Clarifying that he did not invent the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), Dr. Kounavis explained that his work focused on creating hardware capabilities that could perform complex cryptographic operations directly within processors. Beginning in the early 2010s, these instructions became part of Intel server processors and enabled encrypted data to be processed at extremely high speeds, helping strengthen the performance and security of internet-based computing.
Dr. Kounavis has also contributed to multiple areas of cryptography, including cryptographic algorithm acceleration, the design and analysis of non-standard encryption systems, authenticated encryption and provable security. He described cryptography as a discipline in which complex mathematical techniques are used to build and analyze defenses, likening the field to a contest between attackers and defenders—only with equations rather than conventional weapons. His work has included co-designing a block cipher and developing an authenticated-encryption mode intended to support multiple features in memory-processing environments.
Beyond his technical accomplishments, Dr. Kounavis discussed the personal journey that accompanied his professional development. He came to the United States from Greece as a young PhD student and began his studies at Columbia University at age 22. Adjusting to graduate school while learning to live independently presented challenges, from managing the demands of an Ivy League academic environment to handling everyday responsibilities on his own. Over time, however, he came to appreciate the opportunities and people he encountered in the United States while continuing to maintain a strong connection to his Greek roots. Today, he said, he no longer thinks of himself primarily as an immigrant, but rather as someone whose life, relationships and contributions have become deeply connected to the country.
Dr. Kounavis also revealed a creative side that exists alongside his engineering career. His love of music began in childhood, when he was fascinated by marching bands, and he later studied classical music at the Athens Conservatory. He continues to play music and has experimented with composing his own sheet music. Although the responsibilities of work and family have reduced the amount of time he can devote to music, he still considers playing the piano, even for 10 or 20 minutes, a meaningful way to maintain balance in his life. He spoke fondly of composers including Frédéric Chopin, Joe Hisaishi and Ralph Vaughan Williams, whose music he often turns to for relaxation and reflection.
Family has become another central part of Dr. Kounavis's life. As the father of two children, he emphasized the importance of spending time with family and gradually learning to give children greater autonomy as they approach adulthood. He also described walking and jogging, traveling with his family and spending time outdoors as important sources of balance and perspective. For Dr. Kounavis, these activities are not simply hobbies but opportunities to remain connected to the people and experiences that matter most.
Community and service have likewise become increasingly important to his outlook. Dr. Kounavis said that giving back and contributing to the people around us ultimately represents what life is about. He explained that, as people grow older, they increasingly recognize that their contributions are not solely about personal achievement but about what they can do for others.
When asked which historical figure he would invite to lunch, Dr. Kounavis chose pioneering computer scientist Alan Turing. He described Turing as someone whose work fundamentally changed the world and expressed a desire to tell him how deeply his contributions are admired and valued. The choice reflected Dr. Kounavis's enduring connection to the history and evolution of computer science.
Reflecting on his own career, Dr. Kounavis said he would not necessarily change the decisions that brought him to where he is today. He explained that career choices are shaped by both personality and circumstances, rather than being random decisions made at individual forks in the road. That perspective has contributed to a broader philosophy centered on humility. For Dr. Kounavis, humility is not simply a way of building relationships or approaching difficult technical problems; it is the recognition that human beings are inherently imperfect and that perfection is unattainable.
"The more you realize that," Dr. Kounavis explained during the interview, "and the more you realize that it's not about reaching a goal but always moving upwards toward reaching a goal, the happier we are." For him, life is defined not by achieving a final state of perfection, but by continual growth, contribution and movement toward something better.
