Spanning more than four decades, Ms. Kaul's career has been defined by a commitment to expanding access to communication and literacy for individuals whose learning needs may not be fully addressed through traditional auditory-based approaches. Her professional experience encompasses speech-language pathology, deaf education, clinical instruction, professional development and the creation of innovative multimodal approaches to speech and literacy.

Central to Ms. Kaul's professional legacy is FONEMZ®: Speak & Read, an innovative multimodal program she created and developed to make the relationship among speech sounds, phonemic awareness and written language more visible, interactive and accessible. The program assigns distinctive colors and shapes to phonemes and integrates visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic learning experiences to help learners connect speech production with sound awareness, word formation, spelling and reading.

As chief executive officer and developer of FONEMZ®: Speak & Read, Ms. Kaul has transformed decades of clinical observation and professional expertise into a structured educational system designed to support diverse learners. Her work reflects a longstanding conviction that when traditional approaches do not provide sufficient access to learning, clinicians and educators must expand the pathways through which information is presented and experienced. It is effective with all ages, early childhood to adults. FONEMZ attained an evidence-based status with the first publication of research in 2014, Communicative Disorders Quarterly: Pieretti, R.A., Kaul, S.D., Zarchy, R.M., and O'Hanlon, L.M. Using a multimodal approach to facilitate articulation, phonemic awareness and literacy in young children.

The multimodal 3D tactile program of FONEMZ®: Speak & Read, evolved into an interactive digital application that allows learners to actively engage with and manipulate visual representations of speech sounds. The program consists of 19 units, with the introductory five units available at no cost. Its adaptation for virtual instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic further demonstrated the flexibility of the multimodal framework for use beyond traditional face-to-face settings.

Ms. Kaul's innovation is grounded in extensive experience across clinical, educational and university environments. From 1979 to 2015, she served for 36 years as a speech, language and hearing pathologist with the San Juan Unified School District. Throughout her career, she has worked with individuals across the lifespan, including deaf and hard-of-hearing children, individuals with speech and language disorders, people with Down syndrome and adults rebuilding communication skills following stroke. For nine of those years she was a recognized as a mentor teacher in the State of California's Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment Program (BTSA).

From 2012 to 2024, Ms. Kaul further extended her influence to the next generation of professionals as a clinical instructor in speech pathology and audiology at California State University, Sacramento. In this role, she mentored developing clinicians and shared principles and strategies drawn from decades of direct clinical practice.

Her commitment to professional education extends beyond the university setting. Since 2008, Ms. Kaul has served as a California Certified Professional Development Provider, offering continuing education opportunities related to articulation, speech sound disorders, language intervention and multimodal learning. Through these programs, she has shared her expertise with fellow professionals while advocating for approaches that recognize individual differences in how people process, understand and express information.

Ms. Kaul's career began with work with LAUSD as an assistant in a special day class for speech and language-impaired students. While attending California State University, Northridge, she worked as an interpreter for deaf individuals. These experiences helped shape her lifelong interest in accessible communication. Her early exposure to deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and communicatively handicapped preschool classrooms contributed to an enduring professional question: How can communication and literacy instruction be made accessible when listening alone is not enough?

That question ultimately became a driving force behind decades of clinical exploration and innovation.

A significant milestone came when Ms. Kaul was awarded a U.S. Patent for a System and Process for Teaching Speech to Individuals with Hearing and Speech Disabilities. The patent represents an important achievement in a career devoted not only to providing speech-language services, but also to developing new tools and approaches for making communication instruction more accessible.

Ms. Kaul has also maintained active involvement in the professional community as a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She has shared her expertise through professional presentations, including engagements associated with both organizations, bringing greater attention to multimodal learning, speech sound production, phonemic awareness and literacy.

Her academic foundation includes a Master of Arts from California State University, Northridge, where her experiences within a university community serving a substantial deaf and hard-of-hearing population further strengthened her interest in sign language, communication access and multimodal learning.

Throughout her career, Ms. Kaul has also supported professional and community organizations serving individuals with communication and learning differences. Her contributions have included involvement with organizations and conferences associated with speech-language pathology, deaf education and Down syndrome advocacy. She was also nominated for the You Light the Way Award by the San Juan Unified School District.

For Ms. Kaul, however, professional accomplishment has always been closely connected to the people who supported her journey. She credits her mother's encouragement with helping establish the foundation for her perseverance and creativity and recognizes her husband, family and friends for providing the support that allowed her to pursue new ideas throughout her career.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Ms. Kaul treasures time with her family, including her husband, two daughters, son-in-law and two grandchildren. She is an artistic who specializes in painting and sculpture and also enjoys skiing, biking, hiking and gardening.

Looking ahead, Ms. Kaul remains committed to expanding awareness of multimodal approaches to speech, language and literacy through professional education, presentations and the continued development of FONEMZ®: Speak & Read. She is particularly interested in increasing recognition of the relationship among speech sound production, phonemic awareness and literacy and in helping educators and clinicians provide additional pathways for learners who benefit from visual, tactile and kinesthetic supports.
