/24-7PressRelease/ - Perry Point, MD, August 23, 2008—Sharon R. Atkin, Chief Optometry Perry Point VAMC of the VA Maryland Health Care System, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of optometry.

Dr. Atkin has more than 23 years of professional experience and specializes in ocular health and vision care services. Her responsibilities include providing diagnoses and treatment for patients with eye diseases, providing corrections for vision problems, educating optometry students and residents and providing leadership and administration of the clinic. As she became disillusioned with her profession of physical therapy a friend attending optometry school encouraged her to pursue a career in optometry. She currently holds faculty appointments to four schools and colleges of optometry and has presented numerous professional posters, publications and lectures.

Dr. Atkin is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and has served as Acting Director of the Optometry Service for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Among her numerous accomplishments she has participated on the editorial board of optometric journals, served as a journal referee and as a guest editor of a journal issue. She has been appointed to the Field Advisory Group for the Director, VA Optometry Service and its' Executive Council and serves as a consultant to a number of corporate healthcare advisory panels. Dr. Atkin considers her election to Vice President and then President for two terms of the National Association of VA Optometrists (NAVAO), and being the first woman to hold these positions, to be her greatest professional accomplishments. Her nomination on two occasions to the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Optometry has been the highlight of her career. Dr. Atkin attributes her success to her hard work, self-motivation, dedication and commitment to her patients.

Dr. Atkin is currently in the process of building a home-based business involving E-¬commerce, media placement, affiliate marketing and information marketing. She is conducting her various business ventures under the name Optopod Enterprises, Inc.
