Ana Espino Recognized for Excellence in Biochemistry and Medical Sciences

Dr. Espino's team is utilizing Helminth molecules in drug development for inflammatory diseases

    SAN JUAN, PR, January 29, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Ana Espino has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With more than 30 years of experience as a scientist and educator, Dr. Espino has been an associate professor with the department of microbiology and medical zoology at the University of Puerto Rico since 2003. Since 2007, she has also served as an associate professor in the Laboratory of Molecular Parasitology, where her work has been integral in the development of drugs used to treat a number of diseases. Her areas of research include molecular and parasite immunology, particularly fascioliasis caused by Fasciola hepatica. Earlier in her career, she served as an assistant and associate researcher at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, and the director of the Parasitology Separtment and of the Trematode Parasites' Laboratory.

Dr. Espino began her career as a student at the University of Havana, obtaining a BS in biochemistry in 1982. She then joined the Institute of Tropical Medicine, earning an MS in parasitology and parasite immunology in 1987, and a PhD in parasite immunology in 1997. From 1998 to 2002, she relocated to the United States to complete a postdoctoral program in Molecular Parasitology with the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine's Department of Pathology.

A respected voice in the field, Dr. Espino has served as a reviewer for several scholarly journals, including Experimental Parasitology, Parasitology Research, and the Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology. She has also contributed to articles appearing the Annals of Clinical Pathology, the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the Journal of Immunology, and Scientific Report. She serves on the editorial board of the Annals of Clinical and Medical Microbiology, and Clinical and Vaccine Immunology. She is a member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the American Society for Microbiology, the American Society of Parasitology, and the American Association of Immunologists.

In recognition of her contributions to the profession, she received the National Prize for Excellence in Applied Research and the National Prize for Excellence in Teaching and Research in 1999. Since 2011, she has been recognized as a Distinguished Professor of the Graduate Program, and her research has been awarded grants such as the Support of Competitive Research Research Advancement Award, and from the RTRN Small Grants Program. Dr. Espino has filed two patent applications with the United States Patents and Trademarks Office.
