Andrew E. Sloan, MD, Recognized for Achievements in Neurosurgery

Dr. Sloan was involved in the development of Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy



Focusing in the area of neurological research, Dr. Sloan is noted as one of the pioneers in the immunotherapy of brain tumors.

    CLEVELAND, OH, January 15, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Andrew E. Sloan, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Focusing in the area of neurological research, Dr. Sloan is noted as one of the pioneers in the immunotherapy of brain tumors. He was also involved in the development of Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy, a type of surgery that has benefited from recent improvements in technology. His research interests extend to brain tumors, convection-enhanced delivery (CED), gamma knife and cyberknife stereotactic radiosurgery, image-guided neurosurgery, neurosurgery, skull base surgery, stereotactic surgery, and tumor vaccines.

Drawing upon nearly 20 years of medical experience, Dr. Sloan serves as a professor and vice chair of the department of neurological surgery with Case Western Reserve University. In this position, he reports to the chairman on clinical and research activities involving the department of neurological surgery. Dr. Sloan also maintains responsibility for the Brain Tumor and Neurological Program. Outside of his involvement with Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Sloan is credited with establishing a company that simulates brain tumor surgeries. He hopes these simulations will help prepare surgeons in a way that is similar to how pilots must complete simulated flights before they are permitted to become licensed pilots.

In recognition of his commitment to medicine, Dr. Sloan was selected as the recipient of the Neuro-oncology Award by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons in 2016. He was previously awarded a Clinical Research Career Development Award by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, as well as a Clinician Investigator Award from the American Brain Tumor Association. In an effort to remain alert of recent developments in his fields of focus, Dr. Sloan maintains involvement with the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He previously served as the president of the Ohio State Neurosurgical Society for one year.

Driven by a lifelong desire to become a physician, Dr. Sloan attended Yale University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1985. He went on to complete an MD through the Harvard Medical School in 1990. During this time, Dr. Sloan developed an interest in neuroscience and surgery, which led him to pursue a career as a neurosurgeon. He completed a residency in neurosurgery at UCLA, where he later served as the chief resident in neurosurgery from 1996 to 1997. While completing a fellowship in neurosurgery through the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Dr. Sloan joined Wayne State University as the director of the Brain Tumor & Neuro-oncology Center.

Since 2007, Dr. Sloan has served the University Hospitals in a variety of roles, including as the director of the Brain Tumor and Neuro-oncology Center with the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, Peter D. Cristal Chair of Neurosurgery with the Center for Translational Neuroscience, and director of stereotactic radiosurgery with the University Hospitals Case Medical Center. He was most recently recognized as the vice chair of the department of neurological surgery with Case Western Reserve University in 2014.

Dr. Sloan began his academic career in 1999, when he accepted the position of associate professor with Wayne State University. He has been recognized as a professor with Case Western Reserve University since 2014. As Dr. Sloan moves forward with his career, he intends to continue being a leader in clinical trials for malignant brain tumors, as well as lead a national program in that area.
