Barbara Marie Wirostko M.D. Recognized for Contributions to Medical Science

Dr. Wirostko is honored for promoting medical advances in the field of ophthalmology



Recently she established a non-profit foundation in honor of her oldest child, the Joseph James Morelli Scholarship Fund.

    PARK CITY, UT, February 08, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Barbara Wirostko has been included in Marquis Who's Who. An expert in the field of ophthalmology, Dr. Wirostko has been the chief medical officer with Eyegate Pharmaceuticals since 2016, having been the co-founder and chief scientific officer with Jade Therapeutics since 2012 until it was acquired by Eyegate. In addition, she has served as an adjunct associate professor with the University of Utah School of Medicine since 2010 and recently promoted to Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. From 2010 to 2012, she worked as the chief medical officer of Altheos, Inc., and she was senior medical director with a global medical leadership role at Pfizer from 2006 to 2010. Earlier in her career, she worked in private practice as the chief of ophthalmology at the Huntington Medical Group, Huntington, NY.

Dr. Wirostko began her career at Cornell University, obtaining a Bachelor's Degree, with distinction, in microbiology in 1987, later holding a fellowship for glaucoma with the school. She went on to earn an MD from Columbia University in 1991, completing her residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. She is board certified in ophthalmology, a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Glaucoma Society, and a member of the Utah Ophthalmological Society. Additionally, she is a resident research director at the Moran, serves on various journal editorial review boards and on grant committees including the Glaucoma Foundation, New York, NY, Grant Review Committee and scientific advisory panel.

Dr. Wirostko has shared her expertise as a lecturer and student mentor. She is internationally recognized for her clinical research on exfoliation, a specific type of glaucoma, for which she is invited to speak at conferences around the world. She is a long time active member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and has served the organization as a member on various leadership sub committees through the years.

Dr. Wirostko's drug and development research has been supported by multiple grants, including Phase 1 and Phase 2 SBIR Grants from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense in 2015 for close to 3 million total. Her exfoliation clinical research has been funded by the University of Utah and additional grants from the Glaucoma Foundation. In 2015, she was selected by her peers at the Moran Department of Ophthalmology as Clinician of the Year.

Recently she established a non-profit foundation in honor of her oldest child, the Joseph James Morelli Scholarship Fund, who was killed in a car accident, partnering with the National Center for Learning Disabilities to award nearly $50,000 to more than 30 students over 3 years in 13 states with dyslexia pursuing careers in STEM fields. http://parkcitycf.org/morelli/. Dr. Wirostko resides in Park City, Utah with her husband Dr. Joseph Morelli and children Robert, Julia and Cristina where they enjoy skiing and the mountain life.
