In this position, Dr. Orth was directly involved with the development of the VISTA spacecraft, which aimed to utilize Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) to power the spacecraft to Mars. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Orth has completed research pertaining to multiple areas of physics, including the negative search for quarks, high altitude cosmic-ray spectrometry, Monte Carlo nuclear electromagnetic cascade calculations and real-time corrected telescope images. He is also credited with designing inertial confinement fusion chambers, targets and lasers, including diode-pumped solid-state lasers, as well as developing computer optimization software. His interests extend to systems analysis related to the National Ignition Facility (NIF), fusion capsule degradation mechanisms and Inertial Fusion Energy power plant design.

Long before pursuing formal education, Dr. Orth developed an interest in physics after witnessing lightning hit the top of a flag pole a short distance away from where he slept as a child. Driven to understand how the world worked, he attended the University of Washington, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1964. He later completed a PhD through the California Institute of Technology in 1970, before joining the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, TX, as a research associate. Prior to joining the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1978, Dr. Orth briefly worked as a physicist with the University of California Space Sciences Laboratory.

In recognition of his contributions to the field of scientific research and development, Dr. Orth has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including the 4th edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, published in 1997. Most recently, he was selected as the recipient of the Science and Technology Award by the NIF Advanced Radiographic Capability (ARC) in 2016, and published the prestigious innovative manuscript "Spallation as a Dominant Source of Pusher-Fuel and Hot-Spot Mix in Inertial Confinement Fusion Capsules," Physics of Plasmas 23, 022706 (2016).
