Most recently serving as the director of United Methodist Studies at the Lancaster Theological Seminary from 2007 to 2014, Dr. Yrigoyen previously served in the same position at the Evangelical Theological Seminary from 2006 to 2008. Dr. Yrigoyen began his career in the church in 1958 as a pastor of various Methodist Churches in Pennsylvania. He was chaplain and professor of religion at Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania from 1962 to 1982, and acted as a campus minister at the Methodist Church in Philadelphia for two years. From 1982 to 2005, he acted as the general secretary of the General Committee on Archives and History at the United Methodist Church in Madison, New Jersey.
Dr. Yrigoyen served in academia in a variety of capacities. He was a visiting scholar at the Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 1980, and served the school as an adjunct professor for 3 years. He was an adjunct professor of church history at Drew University from 1982 to 2005, and at the Moravian Theological Seminary from 1994 to 2002. Dr. Yrigoyen was also a member of the executive committee of the World Methodist Council from 1986 to 2006, and board director of the Wesley Works Editorial Project from 1982 to 2006.
A member of the corporate board of the Mercersburg Society for 9 years, Dr. Yrigoyen served as board director of Religious and Theological Abstracts from 2007 to 2011. Furthermore, he also provided his services to his community as a chaplain at Ocean City Tabernacle in addition to the roles of secretary and alumni council member for the Lancaster Theological Seminary, where he served from 2002 to 2008.
Dr. Yrigoyen received a Doctor of Divinity from Albright College in 1987. He also holds a PhD from Temple University, a Master of Theology from the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from Lancaster Theological Seminary, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania. He was ordained to the ministry of the United Methodist Church in 1960. He is the author of "Acts for Our Time" in 1987, "John Wesley: Holiness of Heart and Life" in 1996, and "Belief Matters: United Methodism's Doctoral Standards" in 2001.
Dr. Yrigoyen is also the editor of multiple creative works, including Reformed and Catholic," "Catholic and Reformed," the second and third editions of "Historical Dictionary of Methodism," "The Global Impact of the Wesleyan Traditions and Their Related Movements," "Praising the God of Grace: The Theology of Charles Wesley's Hymns," "United Methodism at Forty: Looking Back, Looking Forward," the "T&T Clark Companion to Methodism," and "Early Creeds." He also served as the editor of the Methodist History Journal from 1982 to 2006. In addition, Dr. Yrigoyen served as the photographer for Volume I and Volume II of "Reading Railroad Action."
Dr. Yrigoyen is a member of the Wesley Historical Society, the Charles Wesley Society, and the Oxford Institute of Methodist Theological Studies. He served as the general secretary of the World Methodist Historical Society from 1987 to 2006, as a member of the board of directors of the Mercersburg Society, and as the treasurer of the United Methodist Historical Society. For his outstanding service and dedication to his community, he was commended with the distinguished service award by the United Methodist Church in 2005, and he was honored as a Masland fellow of the Union Theological Seminary in 1975 and 1980.
Dr. Yrigoyen has also been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Religion, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Yrigoyen has been married to Jeanette Alice Brittingham for almost 60 years. They have two children together: Debra Jean and Charles III. In his spare time, he enjoys model railroading and railroad photography.
