Chester Moore Celebrates More Than 50 Years of Professional Excellence in Medical Entomology

Dr. Moore has featured his work in the Journal of the American Mosquito Control Association



His work on "stowaway mosquitoes " has led to a national monitoring system, and he has worked to better predict West Nile virus outbreaks.

    FORT COLLINS, CO, January 09, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Chester Moore has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. With more than 50 years of experience and now "semi-retired," Dr. Moore has worked in a variety of roles with Colorado State University. In 1982, shortly after his arrival at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Fort Collins laboratory, he began as an Affiliate Faculty member in the Departments of Entomology (now Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management, BSPM) and Microbiology (now Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology, MIP). Dr. Moore was also an early faculty member of the Program in Ecological Studies (now Graduate Degree Program in Ecology). Following Dr. Moore's retirement from the CDC in 2002, he accepted a faculty appointment in CSU's College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (Department of Environmental & Radiological Health Sciences as a Senior Research Scientist from 2003 to 2005 and Professor in 2005 and 2006; and Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology from 2006 to 2012). He retired in 2012, but maintains current Affiliate Faculty appointments in both MIP and BSPM departments. Additionally, he was a Supervisory Research Entomologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Vector Borne Infectious Diseases in Fort Collins, CO from 1981 to 2002, and in San Juan, PR from 1974 to 1981. Prior to that, he was with the Department of Biology at the University of Puerto Rico as an assistant professor from 1968 to 1972, and as an associate professor from 1972 to 1974. He has also been an entomologist with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research Department of Entomology in Washington, DC from 1966 to 1968.

Dr. Moore began his career at the University of California, Davis, earning a BS in 1960, an MS in 1962, and a PhD in 1966. He has contributed to numerous professional publications, including the Journal of Medical Entomology, Ecosphere, and the Journal of the American Mosquito Control Association. His work on "stowaway mosquitoes " has led to a national monitoring system, and he has worked to better predict West Nile virus outbreaks. His articles include " Investigating vector-borne and zoonotic diseases with remote sensing and GIS," "Temporal and spatial variability of entomological risk indices for West Nile virus infection in Northern Colorado: 2006-2013" and "Detection of West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes and seropositive juvenile birds in the vicinity of virus-positive dead birds."

Dr. Moore's contributions to the field have earned him many awards throughout his career. The American Mosquito Control Association awarded him the Medal of Honor in 2013, as well as the Meritorious Service Award in 1988 and 1995. The Society for Vector Ecology gave him the Distinguished Achievement Award in 2008, and the Outstanding Service Award in 1989. He received a Service Award from the West Central Mosquito & Vector Control Association in 1988, a Service Recognition Plaque from the Puerto Rico Department of Health in 1981, and a Secretary' s Award for Distinguished Service from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 2001. The U.S. Public Health Service recognized him with Group Awards in 1976, 1981, and 1994, with a Special Recognitions Award in 1988 and 1993, and a Superior Performance Award in 1987.
