A retired music and early childhood educator and consultant, Dr. Dvorak currently works as the owner of Dvorak Enterprises in Las Vegas, NV, since 1992. Previously, he served as an educator at the Clark County School District from 1995 to 2011. He was also the owner of Dvorak Associates in Loveland, CO, from 1988 to 1992. He is currently in the process of publishing educational electronic and book materials for teaching basic music instrument repair to university music students as well as instrumentalists at large. Dr. Dvorak has a long history of service in music education with expertise in conducting. He began his career in music in public schools of South Dakota, first as the acting Director of Bands and Choral Music in 1961 at Delmont High School, then at Armour High School from 1962 to 1964. In 1964, he served as the Director of Bands at Chamberlain High School until 1966, and then began working as the assistant director of Bands at Minot State College, North Dakota.
In 1967, Dr. Dvorak moved to California to serve as director of Bands at Palo Verde Unified School District for two years, and in 1969, he moved to Arizona to serve as a graduate teaching assistant at Arizona State University until 1972. He also worked in Iowa as Director of Bands for three years at William Penn University and acting music department chair for one year. Dr. Dvorak was an Assistant Professor of Music at Southwestern Oklahoma State University from 1975 to 1976, Director of Bands & Music Department Chair at Mount San Jacinto College from 1976 to 1981, Music Department Program Leader and Director of Bands at the Jefferson School of the Performing Arts in Portland, OR, from 1982 to 1985, and French horn instructor at Colorado State University from 1988 to 1990. In 1995 Dr. Dvorak began a second career in Las Vegas, Nevada, becoming a Special Education teacher of Early Childhood 3 to 5 year olds until retiring in 2011. Near the end of his teaching career Dr. Dvorak was invited to participate as a music educator advisor during a tour of several weeks to promote music education in Africa.
Dr. Dvorak received a Doctor of Education from Arizona State University in 1973. He also graduated from the University of South Dakota with a Master's degree in Music in 1965 and a Bachelor of Science in 1962. He has contributed multiple articles to professional journals.
Outside of his career in the classroom, Dr. Dvorak served as a guest band conductor at the International Peace Garden Music Camp in Dunseith, ND, in 1976. He also acted as state chairman of the National Band Association in Iowa from 1972 to 1974, and in Arizona from 1970 to 1972. He was dean of students at the International Peace Garden Music Camp in 1967, assistant music conductor at Douglas County Bi-Centennial in South Dakota in 1961, and a guest conductor and adjudicator at various music festivals in the Midwest, South, and Western United States. He also served the church as a choir director of the Lutheran Church in Knoxville, Iowa from 1973 to 1974.
Dr. Dvorak served as an organist and confirmation teacher at Zion Lutheran Church in Blythe, CA, from 1967 to 1969 as well as organist at Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain, SD, from 1964 to 1966 and choir director at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Minot, SD from 1966 to 1967. Dr. Dvorak was also a choir director at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Armour, SD, from 1962 to 1964, and church organist and vocal soloist at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kaylor, SD, from 1953 to 1959. He also served as an Arizona State University Research Representative at the Music Educator's National Conference in 1970, and he is a lifetime member of the National Association for Music Education.
Dr. Dvorak was born and raised on a farm near Kaylor, South Dakota. His parents, Alvin J. Dvorak (dec) and Frieda K. (Rembold) Dvorak from Tripp, South Dakota, started him in music by getting him piano lessons at age six. After graduating from the eighth grade he took French horn lessons and became a member of the Scotland High School state championship band in Scotland, South Dakota. Prior to beginning his college education he also was a catcher for two years for the Scotland class B state championship baseball team. Dr. Dvorak was named to Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges as a graduating senior at USD in 1962.
Dr. Dvorak was awarded as an Outstanding Educator of America from 1974 to 1975. Over the course of his career, he has had many former students contact him to thank him for the impact and influence he has had on their lives. His proudest career moments involve the prize winning performances of his music groups at competitions and a particular moment at the Lloyd Center in Portland, OR, where a father and son came rushing up after his band's rousing performance, with the father remarking "my son wants to become a conductor like you someday!" He has been married to Patricia Ann Dunlap for more than 38 years. They have three children: Lori Michele, Debra Jean Baker, and Jeff Michael as well as three grandchildren, Casey Dvorak, Lindsay Baker, Dillon Baker, and a great grandson, Jason Dvorak. In his spare time, he enjoys photography, travelling, and working with computers. He has named two individuals who were mentors during his career and to whom he is eternally grateful, Dr. James W. Jurrens (dec) and Mr. Norbert C. Wenzel of Delmont, Parkston, and Mitchell communities in South Dakota. He also is very appreciative of the many, wonderful students he had over the years, many of whom have remained in contact with him via social media.
