Dr. McCaffree is Regents' Professor of Medicine in the Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care and Sleep Section in the Department of Internal Medicine at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, and Critical Care Medicine, he began teaching at the university in 1977, as an assistant professor turned associate and finally full professor in 1987. Dr. McCaffree also served as chief of staff at the Oklahoma Memorial Hospital from 1985 to 1990, and at the VA Medical Center from 1991 to 2009. His research interests encompass critical care medicine, acute lung injury, COPD and tobacco cessation.

Outside of the classroom, Dr. McCaffree is the associate director for policy for the Oklahoma Tobacco Research Center. He has represented the American College of Chest Physicians where he not only served as president but also participated in the ACT coalition when a national tobacco settlement was being considered and testified before Congress on a number of tobacco issues. He was also named to the board of directors of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust by former Attorney General Drew Edmondson after Oklahoma voters approved placing the money from the multistate tobacco settlement into a constitutionally protected trust fund.

Dr. McCaffree has authored 20 book chapters and numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and edited the book "Critical Care in Internal Medicine". The past president of the American College of Chest Physicians, the Oklahoma State Medical Association, and the Oklahoma County Medical Society, he has also been a longtime member of several other organizations such as the American Thoracic Society and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. McCaffree served his local community in Oklahoma City as a board member of the Catholic Social Ministries, the American Red Cross, and the Health Alliance for the Uninsured. He has been chairman of the Hospice of Oklahoma County as well as the Hospice Foundation of Oklahoma.

Completing a BS in Psychology at Oklahoma State University in 1965, Dr. McCaffree then completed his medical training at the College of Medicine of the University of Oklahoma, earning an MD in 1969, where he completed his internship from 1969 to 1970. He subsequently started his residency at the University of Oklahoma but completed it at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD from 1972 to 1974, followed by a fellowship in pulmonary disease at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center from 1975 to 1977. Named to both Leadership Oklahoma City and Leadership Oklahoma and Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Dr. McCaffree is married to Mary Anne Wight and is the father of two children. His wife is also a physician.
