Alter, partner at the law firm Alter, Wolff & Foley, has been included in Marquis Who's Who, the world's preeminent biographer since 1899. In June 2016, Ms. Alter co-founded the boutique matrimonial and family law firm, Alter, Wolff & Foley LLP in New York City. The firm was formed with five of her fellow lawyers from the NYC-based firm Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman, where Ms. Alter was a partner since 1997. She brings a wealth of experience in matrimonial law to her new firm, having been recognized repeatedly as one of the top family law attorneys in the country. Ms. Alter has also appeared as an expert witness, acted as co-counsel with attorneys in other jurisdictions and has argued many appeals in the various judicial departments of the state.
Prior to joining Kasowitz, Ms. Alter was a partner at Rosenman & Colin for 15 years. Previously, she was a partner at Marshall, Bratter, Greene, Allison & Tucker.
Ms. Alter attended the University of Michigan where she graduated with honors. She went to law school initially at Harvard University before obtaining an LL.B. from Columbia University in 1964. After being admitted to practice in New York in 1965, she started her legal career in the Office of the General Counsel of the Insurance Department of the State of New York.
Ms. Alter is a frequent lecturer on the full spectrum of family law topics, to attorneys and others, both nationwide and internationally. Previously, she served as an adjunct professor at New York University School of Law from 1983-1987 and a Ulysses S. Schwartz fellow at the University of Chicago School of Law in 1988. She would continue teaching as a visiting professor of law at the University of Chicago from 1990-1993. Furthermore, Ms. Alter was a member of the Board of Editors for the New York Law Journal from 1987-2015 and has contributed articles to various legal journals.
Ms. Alter has remained involved in the professional community as well. Her affiliations include the American Law Institute, the American College of Family Trial Lawyers, the New York State Bar Association, the New York City Bar Association, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. She is a former trustee and past chairman of the Lawyers' Fund for Client Protection of the State of New York.
In recognition of her achievements, Ms. Alter was chosen to be featured in the 44th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 23rd through 25th editions of Who's Who in the World and the 15th through 28th editions of Who's Who of American Women. She has also appeared in several editions of Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in the East.
