The electric car market, although very young and small in size has 5 different quick charging standards excluding different AC charging standards. Even one charging standard (CCS) has different versions in Europe and North America. This is one of the biggest challenges to EV fast charger market. Another major challenge to this market is the inability of present vehicles to accept higher charging input. Also, many PHEVs at present are not capable of DC fast charging.
We have seen multiple initiatives taken for expanding charging infrastructure by EU member countries,China and Japan but not much by US. In US,the number of charging stations has remained stagnant at ~16,500 for past two years. Most of the initiatives have been taken by state governments and utility companies but not much has happened at Federal level.Electrify America from VW will build 484 stations with 2,000 ultra-fast EV chargers across US by 2020.
World's biggest EV market China has shown eagerness to create world's biggest charging network and is collaborating with CHAdeMo to build a unified standard for fast chargers.They are looking at 400kW chargers as the next-gen charging solution.
Market Size and Forecast
In most countries, DC fast chargers constitute ~10% -13% of total charger deployment. China, Japan, and Finland have the highest share of rapid charge points. China is the market leader in DC fast charging by volume and Norway by penetration per capita. China had ~120,000 Level 2 charge points and 26,000 DC fast charge points as of July 2018.
CHAdeMO charging standard is the most preferred fast charging standard in Europe, US and Japan. CCS is catching up quickly in Europe and many upcoming EVs from European manufacturers will have CCS standard charging option.

1. In US , the EVgo network increased the number of fast charging stations by 20% in 2017 and plans to have 1,000 DC fast chargers by 2020
2.The New York Power Authority is collaborating with the private sector to install up to 200 fast chargers along important Interstate highways to ultimately make them available every 30 miles.
3.In Europe, the fast charging network 'Ionity", conceptualized by Ford,BMW,VW and Daimler plasn to have 400 fast charging stations by 2020.
4.UK's first 150kW electric vehicle fast chargers installation has already begun
5. Expect many more models to launch in luxury segment to compete with the likes of jaguar I-pace, Mercedes EQC and Audi E-tron, which can actually charge from _100kW chargers
