BLACKSBURG, VA, December 01, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present James Thorp, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Thorp celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Thorp, professor emeritus in the department of electrical and computer engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI&SU), taught as a Hugh P. and Ethey C. Kelley professor and headed the Bradley department of electrical and computer engineering, beginning in 2004. Maintaining an interest in the protection and control of large-scale-power systems, including algorithms for digital protection, adaptive relaying, and real-time control of power systems using measurements obtained from microprocessor relays and phasor measurement units, Dr. Thorp has also studied the complicated dynamical behavior of power systems, including the generation of fractals by such systems and the mechanisms of cascading disturbances.

Prior to joining VPI&SU, Dr. Thorp taught at Cornell University for a span of 39 years in the school of engineering, where he also served as director. Departing the university in 2001 as a Charles N. Mellowes professor of engineering, he was also a longtime consultant for Dowty Control Technologies, located in Boonton, NJ, since 1988. He previously consulted for American Electrical Power for six years during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Completing a BS in Electrical Engineering, MS, and PhD at Cornell University from 1959 to 1962, Dr. Thorp has since contributed numerous chapters to books and articles to many professional journals in his field. He served as associate editor of Transactions on Circuits and Systems, was editor of Transactions on Power Delivery as part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and authored "Computer Relaying for Power Systems" in 1988. Furthermore, he holds several patents in the area of engineering.

Dr. Thorp is a fellow of the IEEE, which awarded him with a Power Engineering Society Outstanding Power Engineering Award and Career Service Award, and was a member of the organization's power system relaying committee. He remains active with National Academy of Engineering, Eta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Xi. A co-recipient of the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Electrical Engineering by the Franklin Institute in 2008, he has been featured in close to 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, James Thorp, PhD, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
