Dr. Kiminami is an award-winning international economist currently serving as a professor with Niigata University in Japan. She has been lauded for her economic papers on the influences of trade and foreign direct investment in Asia, food security and sustainability, as well as agriculture and rural common-pool resources.

Born in Shanghai, China to Xin Yao and Duwen Zhou, Dr. Kiminami studied economics in the School of Industrial Economics at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. She served with Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision for three years before traveling to Japan to study accounting at Mie University. She had her first marriage in 1986 and divorced in 1988. She earned a master's degree in agricultural science from Mie University in 1989 and Ph.D. from The University of Tokyo in agricultural science in 1992. Her second marriage in 1989 to Akira Kiminami produced one child, Kan in 1995.

In 1993, Dr. Kiminami joined University of Tsukuba as a research associate for two years, going on to serve as an assistant professor for one year. As a visiting scholar with the Department of Agricultural, Resource, and Managerial Economics of Cornell University in 1995, she revisited it in 2001. Since 1996, Dr. Kiminami had been employed by Ryukoku University as an associate professor of the Faculty of Intercultural Communication until she started serving as an associate professor with the Faculty of Agriculture of Niigata University in 2002. In 1998, she obtained the diploma of "Leadership Academy" from Foundation for Advanced Studies on International Development (International Development Research Institute). Since 2008, she has become a professor of Institute of Science and Technology of Niigata University, a senior adviser of scientific research and a vice dean of the Graduate School of Science and Technology. In 2010 and 2011, Dr. Kiminami has been invited by INRA, France as a visiting professor for three months in Nantes, and has become a professor of the Institute of Economics of Shanghai University since 2016.

Dr. Kiminami has worked closely with the Niigata Prefectural Government on the economic management of agriculture, notably on regional development, land use, and environmental concerns. She is a member of the board of directors and the editorial board of Japan Section of Regional Science Association International, as well as the editorial board of Agricultural Economics Society of Japan. Since 2014, she has been the member of editorial board of "New Frontiers in Regional Science: Asian Perspectives" series. She was the executive committee chairperson for the 53th Annual Meeting of the Japan Section of the RSAI and is also the member of editorial board of Asia-Pacific Journal of Regional Science.

Dr. Kiminami is the editor of "Public Facilities Planning" in the "Classics in Planning" series and the editor of "Food Security and Industrial Clustering in Northeast Asia" in "New Frontiers in Regional Science: Asian Perspectives" series. She has received the 2016 Best Book Award, the 2013 Best Book Award and the 2009 Best Article Award from the Japan Section of Regional Science Association International, as well as a 2001 Outstanding Journal Article Award from the Agricultural Economics Society of Japan. She was selected for inclusion in seven volumes of Who's Who in the World from 2009 to 2016.
