Marcia L. McNair Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    GARDEN CITY, NY, November 09, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Marcia L. McNair with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. McNair celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. A tenured professor of English at Nassau Community College (NCC) since 2007, Ms. McNair teaches journalism and women's studies and formerly served as coordinator of the African-American Read-In and Secretary for the college's Black Women's Initiative, a student retention program. She previously spent time as an assistant program coordinator at the Institute of Afro-American Affairs at New York University, instructor of literature at Malcolm-King College, program coordinator and instructor at LaGuardia Community College, adjunct lecturer in English at York College/CUNY, and adjunct professor of English at Molloy College, where she taught African American literature.

Ms. McNair was also well-known for her years serving as an assistant editor at Essence Magazine, as well as the co-host and producer of the public access television series "Cafe Long Island." Her numerous publication credits include "It Takes a Lioness to Raise Young Lions", an essay that appeared in the fifth edition of "Issues in Feminism/An Introduction to Women's Studies" in 2001; a creative non-fiction story, "Before We Were Gangstas," which won honorable mention in the National New Millennium Writers Creative Nonfiction contest in 2003 and appeared in the anthology, "Memoirs in the Light of Day" in 2008. Her collaborative performance "Diary of a Mad Black Feminist" is now a play titled "Sistas on Fire! A Newsical", for which she received a 2006 and 2007 grant from the Long Island Council for the Arts. The play was a semi-finalist in the Illuminating Artists New Works Festival, the Long Island Fringe Festival in 2010, the New York International Theater Festival in 2017, and the New Works Theater Festival in 2017. Ms. McNair's essay "The Incident Revisited", an excerpt from the play, appeared in the 2017 anthology "Black Lives Have Always Mattered." Furthermore, she was published in the anthology, "Songs of Seasoned Women" in 2008.

A member of the American Association of University Women and Sigma Delta Chi and The Society of Professional Journalists, Ms. McNair is also a member of the NCC Women's Studies Project, the NCC Women's Faculty Association, the NCC Black History Month Committee, and the African American Latino Asian Native American Staff and Faculty Association (ALANA), where Ms. McNair has served as chair of the ALANA scholarship committee for six years. She is also the executive director, founder, and president of the board of directors of Long Island Girl Talk, an academic enrichment program for girls interested in media. She formerly served on the Uniondale Community Council executive board for two years as well.

Ms. McNair earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Dartmouth College, a Master of Art Writing from New York University, and a Certificate in Organizational and Community Leadership from Adelphi University. Included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women, she most recently received a 2017 Certificate of Appreciation by the African American Museum. Ms. McNair was also a two-time recipient of a Certificate of Recognition from the Nassau County Legislature in 2017 and 2007, and received a 2015 Community Service Award from the New Hempstead Democratic Club, a 2015 Black Women's Health Study 20-Year Participant Award, and a 2014 Certificate of Recognition from the Town of Hempstead.
