With nearly 50 years of professional experience to her credit, Dr. Olmstead is currently recognized as professor emerita by the University of California (UC), Davis. Her tenure with UC Davis dates back to 1969, serving as a lecturer in chemistry until 1975, during which she began a 15 year postdoctoral fellowship in 1971. From 1986 to 1997, she was appointed to the role of staff research associate in x-ray crystallography before working as a specialist from 1997 to 2003. Prior to her current position, Dr. Olmstead was promoted to professor of chemistry in 2003.

Before her endeavors in academia, Dr. Olmstead pursued her education at Reed College in 1965, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. Following this achievement, she became a fellow of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, supporting her postgraduate studies. In 1969, Dr. Olmstead would complete her academic efforts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating with a PhD in Chemistry.

Beyond her contributions to UC Davis, Dr. Olmstead has excelled in several fields in relation to her areas of expertise. Since 1988, she has served on the editorial board for the esteemed professional journal, Inorganic Chemistry. In 1996, she held the position of visiting researcher at the University of Bern, and she worked as a visiting professor at the University of Malaya from 2011 to 2012. Additionally, Dr. Olmstead has contributed her research to several prominent journals, including Chemistry Communications, Chemistry - A European Journal, the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Dalton Transactions, and Angewandte Chemie: International Edition.

Dr. Olmstead has also maintained involvement with numerous respected organizations throughout her impressive and long-standing career. She has remained affiliated with the American Institute of Physics, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Electrochemical Society, the American Crystallographic Association, and the American Chemical Society. She has previously been recognized as a fellow of the American Chemical Society in 2014, as well as the American Crystallographic Association in 2016. Furthermore, Dr. Olmstead was selected for inclusion in Who's Who in the West as well as Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.

Inspired to enter her industry by her mentor Thomas Dunne, as well as Larry Dahl and Hakon Hope, Dr. Olmstead is most proud of her students in addition to her contributions to the areas of fullerenes and crystallography. Married to her husband Alan Lester Olmstead since 1966, she is the proud mother of two children, Janis May and Nathan Lester. A tennis enthusiast in her spare time, Dr. Olmstead looks forward to her retirement, having cemented her legacy at UC Davis as both an educator and crystallographer.
