Paving The Path To Higher Education

Local Immigration Law Firm Awards Scholarship to First-Generation American High School Senior

We were very impressed by Ms. Hewitt's scholarship application and feel she embodies the values our scholarship program has sought to reward: hard work, perseverance, and a passion to help others.

PATERSON, NJ, June 29, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Shulman Law Group, a leading immigration law firm based in Paterson, is helping a local first-generation American student pursue her college aspirations. The Shulman Law Group launched their first scholarship search this March, and after receiving a number of inspiring entries from students across New Jersey, are pleased to name Dover High School graduating senior Claudonna Hewitt as the recipient of the $1,000 college scholarship.

With more than 20 years of experience in the litigation and resolution of immigration issues such as employment visas, family visas, and deportation defense, the lawyers of The Shulman Law Group are very familiar with the unique struggles first-generation American students face. Often the first in their families to attend college, these students have a great appreciation for the value of education, but tuition costs can be a barrier. This year, The Shulman Law Group decided to step in to help one stand-out high school senior pursue his or her college goals with their College Scholarship for First-Generation American High School Seniors in NJ, a $1,000 award granted to a student displaying academic prowess with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, who highlights his or her experience as a first-generation American student through an essay submission.

Although The Shulman Law Group received a number of outstanding entries from first-generation American students across the state, one entry stood out as a clear winner. Graduating senior Claudonna Hewitt from Dover, NJ detailed her humble beginnings as a child living in a Brooklyn basement as her mother worked to provide for her. Claudonna's mother instilled the importance of school from a young age, telling her "education is key." Her mother had only a grade school education growing up in Jamaica, where families must pay for schooling that her family could not afford. Although she faced many challenges, Claudonna worked hard and is now graduating from Dover High School with a 3.81 GPA. Claudonna has been accepted to and will be attending Montclair State University and will begin studying to pursue a career as an optometrist.

"We were very impressed by Ms. Hewitt's scholarship application and feel she perfectly embodies the values our scholarship program has sought to reward: hard work, perseverance, and a passion to help others," says Edward Shulman, founder and principal of The Shulman Law Group. "We're pleased to help her continue her studies as a college student and are looking forward to seeing her achievements."

The Shulman Law Group is thrilled to be able to help first-generation American students and their families, not only through their scholarship program, but by counseling and guiding them through the complicated and ever-changing immigration system.
