Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A widely regarded physicist and researcher, Dr. Khare has been an educator with the University of Toledo for more than 10 years. He serves the department of physics and astronomy in a wide range of capacities, including as a professor, director of professional science masters in photovoltaics and, as of 2016, the department chair for physics and astronomy. As a researcher, he is noted for his work in statistical mechanics of nano-scale step fluctuations on crystalline surfaces and study of fundamental properties of nitrides for coating applications.

Driven by an early interest in physics, Dr. Khare chose to pursue a scientific career. He received a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Bombay University in 1987 and Master of Science in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1989, earning Institute Medal in recognition of his achievement as the Most Outstanding Student of the Master of Science Physics Class. He later received a Graduate Research Award from the American Vacuum Society for outstanding scholarship in vacuum science and technology. In 1996, he completed a PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics through the University of Maryland with a thesis entitled, "A Theoretical Study of Step Edge Fluctuations and of Brownian Motion of Adatom and Vacancy Clusters."

Since beginning his career, Dr. Khare has held researcher roles with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Ohio State University, and the University of Maryland. As an educator, he has implemented several innovative teaching methods, such as the "flipped classroom," peer learning, interactive learning, computer-based instruction, Jigsaw methods, pre- and post-assessment of learning, qualitative teaching assessment and project-based science. He is credited with developing two separate interdisciplinary programs at the University of Toledo; a Minor in Renewable Energy, and a Master of Science: Professional in Photovoltaics program.

A respected voice in the scientific community, Dr. Khare has contributed numerous articles and research papers to industry-related publications, in addition to delivering presentations at institutions located throughout the United States. In order to stay abreast of recent developments in his areas of focus, he maintains involvement with the American Physical Society.
