Shirleyann Amos, PhD, MSW Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

    SANTA FE, NM, November 21, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name Shirleyann Amos, Ph.D., MSW a Lifetime Achiever. Dr. Amos is a retired mental health therapist who dedicated 21 years of Vietnam, peacetime, and Gulf War service to the U.S. Navy, serving to the rank of yeoman first class petty officer as a designated air warfare specialist. She served as a leader and was honored to provide therapy to numerous veterans who descended into substance abuse or were traumatized by personal injury.

Born to Pink Amos Jr. and Pauline Amos in Hampton, VA. She has a son, John David Taylor, and five grandchildren. Dr. Amos declined a scholarship to Nyack College and enlisted with the Navy in 1973, initially serving in Vietnam on the USS Sanctuary (AH-17.) She was assigned to the commander-in-chief of the Pacific Fleet in Hawaii, and later to the Fleet Training Center for the precommissioning of ships and at the Fire Fighting School in Norfolk, VA. Selected from the top 10 percent of the fleet, Dr. Amos was positioned as a company commander and charged with responsibility of nine companies. Her excellence was recognized with a Commanding Officers Award for Excellence in Orlando, FL. While stationed at the Naval Air Stations in Rota, Spain, Wiesbaden, Germany, and Key West, FL, she provided administrative support in various positions. Following those roles, she underwent rigorous specialized training in Norfolk to become a counseling and assistance director aboard the USS Emory S. Land (AS-39), and unfortunately became paralyzed. Despite her affliction, she continued to excel in her career with the years she had left in the military.

While still working with the Navy, Dr. Amos joined the Florida Keys Memorial Hospital in Key West as a chemical dependency counselor for court-ordered adults and teens. She earned a medical degree from Commonwealth College in Virginia Beach, VA in 1991. Dr. Amos retired from the military in 1994 and became a mental health therapist. She has been a longstanding advocate of LGBT peoples, the disabled, distressed families, and the poor in Florida.

Dr. Amos went on to become an assistant investigator with the Department of Children and Families in Deland, FL. In the late '90s, she completed a degree in psychology from the University of Central Florida, volunteered with the Center for Drug Free Living in Orlando, and served as a therapist for House Next Door in Deland. In 2000, she earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Central Florida, and in 2003, Dr. Amos completed a PhD from the University of Cambridge.

An expert in the field of psychology, Dr. Amos is the co-author of "Conduct Disorder: DSM-IV-TR in Action" and "Childhood Disorder, The Disruptive Behavior Disorders." She is the recipient of a Lifetime Paralyzed Veterans of America Award, and is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors, the Disabled America Veterans of Florida, the American Legion, and Psi Chi.

Dr. Amos was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the World, as well as two volumes of Who's Who of American Women.
