STEAMWOOD, IL, February 14, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Did you know that dental caries are the most common chronic disease that is affecting children from ages 6 to 11 years. That's about 25 percent of the population under 18, and adolescents account for 59 percent of identified tooth decay cases in the U.S.

This is a problem, and it needs to be handled properly. That is why many dentists and dental organizations are going above and beyond to promote dental awareness to communities across the nation. This February is National Children's Dental Health Month, so their efforts are in full force. To combat decay, there are four things Dr. Romano, Streamwood family dentist, suggests to families.

"An increase in dental caries, this is the reality. And it's one I am hoping to fix in my community. If we can teach families to develop better eating and oral hygiene habits, there should be an improvement in overall oral health. There are four steps to better dental care," explains Dr. Romano.

Brush and Floss
A toothbrush and floss are the two most important at-home dental tools that your family needs to use on a daily basis. In fact, a toothbrush should be used twice a day, two minutes each. This ensures that food particles and plaque bacteria are being properly removed. After brushing, remember to floss at least once a day to remove remaining debris from in between teeth.

Healthier Food Choices
Eating a carrot stick once in a while won't be enough. Your family needs to implement plenty of leafy greens, lean protein and dairy products. Dairy products help neutralize cavity-causing acid, and vegetables and lean protein help produce saliva and brush away excess sugar and bacteria.

Take Note of Abnormal Symptoms
If you or a loved one's tooth is sensitive or it aches, don't brush it off. Make sure to talk to your dentist as soon as possible. You could be catching a dental abnormality before it gets worse.

Visit Dentist
Those dental checkups aren't all talk. Your family shouldn't skip an annual exam because a cavity could go undetected and get bigger, causing more dental problems and treatment.
