Mr. Schmitt earned a Bachelor of Arts from Fordham University in 1978, following this accomplishment with a Master in Public Affairs from Princeton University in 1981, as well as certification in theological studies from Georgetown University. He started out his career as a copy editor and reporter for Gannett Westchester Newspapers in Yonkers, NY, and went on to work as a senior editor at McGraw-Hill, a managing editor for a Reed Elsevier business newspaper, an associate editor for the Kiplinger Washington Letter and a senior editor for Chemical Week Associates. He has also worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Long Island at Brooklyn, Fordham University, and the University of Notre Dame. Specialized in multiple areas, he worked for the Institute for Educational Initiatives, and has served as a communications professional and multimedia writer-editor at the University of Notre Dame since 2003.

In 2013, Mr. Schmitt authored "Words of Life," a work focusing on the legacy of the University of Notre Dame's Hesburgh Library. He also co-authored "Football Weekends at Notre Dame" in 2008. Devoted to continued involvement in his professional field, Mr. Schmitt has maintained memberships with the American Marketing Association, the Secular Franciscan Order, the Knights of Columbus and Phi Beta Kappa. Due to his multifaceted accomplishments, he has been listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
