Eric Armin Wagner Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Sociology and Athletics

An award-winning sociologist with extensive experience as an professor at the higher education level, Dr. Wagner is regarded as a pioneer in examining the social aspects of sport in Latin America. Now retired, he spent more than 40 years this field teaching the sociology of sport, third world development, and urban sociology, as well as large introductory courses to nearly 17 thousand students. He has published extensively in his areas and edited several books, including "Sport in Asia and Africa."

For the duration of his career, Dr. Wagner served Ohio University, where he held prominent roles in addition to his work as a professor. He was a longtime chair of the department of sociology and anthropology. Dr. Wagner won a large number of teaching and advising awards, was twice named University Professor, was vice chair of the faculty senate, and chaired nearly every major university committee. He was heavily involved in major university fundraising campaigns, helping to raise many millions of dollars. Dr. Wagner's astounding work has led to accolades including Ohio University's Founder's Citation, the highest honor presented by the university's board of trustees. He is only the seventh person in Ohio University's 200-year history to be given this award. Dr. Wagner also earned the Outstanding Friend of the College of Arts and Sciences Award for his leadership, service, and commitment to the college and university, as well as several alumni awards. He is an Honorary Alumnus of Ohio University. When asked of his success, Dr. Wagner credits the emphasis his family put on education in everything they did.

Outside the university, Dr. Wagner was a longtime director and managing director of the U.S. Orienteering Federation, treasurer and president of the Midwest Association for Latin American Studies, chair of the board of directors of Planned Parenthood of Southeast Ohio, as well as a member of Delta Sigma Phi, Alpha Kappa Delta, and Phi Kappa Phi. He was the winner of the Fuerst Award for Outstanding Community Leader. In retirement, Dr. Wagner was a member of the board of directors of his large, self-managed neighborhood association in Florida. He is an ordained elder and deacon of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. and an avid bridge player. An active international traveler, he is a Silver Awardee of the Traveler's Century Club, and has visited 159 countries and territories, including all continents.

Before establishing himself professionally, Dr. Wagner earned a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio State University, a Master of Arts from the University of Florida, and a PhD from the University of Florida. He began his career with Ohio University in 1968 as a faculty member, and rose to a full professor in 1983. Now, Dr. Wagner is reducing his activities and enjoying a full retirement.
