Paul G. Chace Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Achievements in Archaeology

Dr. Chace has been the proprietor of Paul G. Chace & Associates since 1976, offering CRM and land planning consultation from his offices in Escondido. He is a cultural resources consultant, qualified under standards set by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, and has specialized in cultural resources management, preservation law, and ethnic relations theory. As an anthropologist, he has been an elected fellow of the American Anthropological Association since 1976, and is certified by the Register of Professional Archaeologists. He has been in the archaeology field for more than 45 years, and has had works published widely on Western prehistory, the San Diego Presidio, and Chinese American cultural heritage.

Born in Compton, CA, Dr. Chace studied anthropology at California State University, Long Beach, and went on to earn a MA in History from the State University of New York, Oneonta, in 1974. Before earning his Master's degree, he served as curator of anthropology with the San Bernardino County Museum, and interned at the New York State Historical Association. He has worked with the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, the Roberson Center for the Arts and Sciences, the Broome County Historical Society, and the Museum of Man in San Diego, CA.

Dr. Chace became a lecturer with the University of California, Riverside, in 1985, where he earned a second MA in Anthropology and a PhD in 1992. His dissertation was "Returning Thanks: Chinese Rites in an American Community." He worked as director of the cultural resources division of the Keith Companies from 1993 to 2000 in Costa Mesa, CA.

While formally employed by many prestigious institutions, Dr. Chace has held auxiliary positions with numerous heritage and archaeological groups. He is currently a trustee of the Presidio Heritage Trust in San Diego, the former chair of the Presidio Heritage Development Circle and was a Mayoral appointment to the city's Presidio Park Council. He is a past President of the Pacific Coast Archaeological Society and The Society for California Archaeology. He has supported the Overseas Chinese Research Group of the Society for Historical Archaeology, where he was an editor from 1983 to 1996. He was part of the editorial board for the Gum Saan Journal of the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California, and has also conducted postgraduate work with the University of Redlands, San Diego State University, Palomar College, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Chace is the recipient of numerous grants, honors, and awards, including the 2001 Mark R. Harrington Award for Conservation Archaeology, the 1996 Award of Recognition from the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California, and inclusion with the Pi Gamma Mu honor society. He is married to Phyllis S. Chace, and has a son, Alan.
