A widely regarded ceramic engineering educator, Dr. Day has worked as a consultant in the field for nearly 60 years. Since 1981, he has served as a Curator's Distinguished Professor of Ceramic Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. A dedicated researcher, Dr. Day is recognized as the co-founder of Mo-Sci Corporation, which specializes in high-tech glass development for clients in a wide range of industries, including health care, energy, automotive, defense and industrial sectors. He has completed research alongside his graduate students, which includes the development of a special glass composition necessary to put small radioactive microspheres in a patient. That work was ultimately patented, which led to the establishment of Mo-Sci Corporation. Since the inception of his career, Dr. Day has contributed more than 380 articles to professional journals pertaining to his area of expertise. In addition, he is credited as the editor of three books.

A Registered Professional Engineer within the state of Missouri, Dr. Day maintains involvement with the Materials Research Society, National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Inventors and National Research Council. He holds more than 53 U.S. and foreign patents for alumina zircon bond for refractory grains and chemically durable nitrogen containing phosphate glasses useful for sealing metals. Dr. Day is recognized as the first person to include radioactive biologically compatible glass microspheres, radioactive glass microspheres and iron phosphate glasses for vitrifying hazardous wastes. He is credited as a co-inventor of TheraSphere, which is used for the treatment of inoperable liver cancer.

Prior to pursuing a career in ceramic engineering, Dr. Day developed an interest in high-temperature materials. He received a Bachelor of Science in Ceramic Engineering from the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1958. Dr. Day went on to attend Pennsylvania State University, where he completed a Master of Science in Ceramic Technology in 1960, and PhD in Ceramic Technology in 1961. Since then, he has enjoyed a variety of positions in the field of ceramics. Missouri School of Mines & Metallurgy (1961) and has served what is now known as the Missouri University of Science and Technology. For more than 50 years, Dr. Day has assisted the university in a wide range of roles. In addition, he is recognized as the former president of The American Ceramic Society.

Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Day has been continually recognized for his contributions to the field of ceramics. Dr. Day has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the Midwest. Most recently, he received the honor of the Stookey Lecture of Discovery from The American Ceramic Society, as well as the Phoenix Award Glass Person of Year, and Citation Award from the University of Missouri. In 2004, Dr. Day was selected as the recipient of an honorary Doctorate in Science from the University of Missouri-Rolla.
