Lights Out in Belize Eco-Village Founded by Canadians
Canada's "Alternatives Journal" shines a light on one Eco-Village's best practices for mitigating light pollution in the Belize rainforest.
SAN IGNACIO, BELIZE, October 10, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Better in Belize Eco-Village is featured as "an incredible low-light community and conservation area worth emulating" in the current edition of AJ Magazine: Canada's Environmental Voice.
The Eco-Village was co-founded by Canadians, Michael Winrow and Kitchener-Waterloo RE/MAX Twin City realtors, Looey Tremblay and Michael J. Saunders.
The Journal cites how this Belize eco-community reduces the impact of light pollution, including the absence of street lights in their 133-acre development in Western Belize. Looey Tremblay said "The majority of light pollution on the planet comes from street lights. So, we decided that no street lights would be installed along the roads that wind through our Belize Eco-Village. Flashlights and head lamps provide an eco-friendly alternative".
Technology, designs and products to help reduce light pollution are outlined in the mandatory Eco-Guidelines of the community. These include the use of fully shielded fixtures and solar-powered low energy, low light LED bulbs.
"Alternatives Journal has it right - we do have a head start on most communities because Western Belize is blessed with some of the darkest skies in the world" said Tremblay. "When you come to our Belize eco-community you'll see what your ancestors saw when they were stargazing - a pristine night sky with stars so numerous, you'll be amazed".
