February 21, 2013 /EIN Presswire/ -- Online reputation management firm InternetReputation.com launches new program for helping clients remove harmful online information.

In general, people in the United States have a big set of laws standing behind them that allow them to say almost anything, anywhere, without fear of reprisal. There are times, however, when the freedom of speech impinges on another person's rights, and at times, comments can be littered with damaging untruths that could cause another person physical or financial harm. It's known as libel (if it's written down) or slander (if it's spoken). InternetReputation.com has a new program that can help people deal with these issues in the online world.

In the past, people who were facing slander or libel were forced to use the courts to get their comments removed. The awards for a case like this can seem appealing. For example, when Donald Trump sued a former beauty queen over comments she made about the Miss USA Pageant, she was ordered to pay $5 million, according to news reports. It's a sum almost anyone would love to have, but before people rush out to hire lawyers, there are serious consequences to such an action, and those must be considered.

A couple in Texas who were targets for an online libel were awarded a $13.75 million settlement, but news reports suggest that the case took years to resolve, and in the interim, the couple had to sell their home and pay well over $250,000 in legal fees. As the case moved forward, all of the nasty comments also stayed in place, and the couple faced ongoing reputation damage as a result.

InternetReputation.com representatives wanted to help, and they knew that there were other avenues that could be explored.

"Oftentimes, websites have specific rules about slander and libel, and users who spew hate on these sites are violating these user agreements," says an InternetReputation.com representative. "We have the clout to bring these issues to the attention of the website administrator, and we can get those comments deleted almost immediately. We've had amazing success with this approach, helping many clients to pull their lives back together without mortgaging their houses in the process. It's work we're really proud of."

Proving libel can be a tricky business, but often, people who have been attacked have the documentation within reach.

"We work with clients and help them see the difference between opinion and libel," says an InternetReputation.com representative. "Legal experts agree that comments that can't be proven or disproven are opinions. Calling someone 'nutty,' for example, might be an opinion. But calling someone a 'child molester with a criminal record' is clearly libelous, if that comment is untrue."

The program is available now, and fees are provided upon request.

"We don't offer flat fees, because each case is a little different and has different requirements," says a company representative. "But we can provide a custom quote in mere minutes. People just need to visit the site to get started."
