Home Interiors: Priced Out of Being Green

There is a whole host of green alternatives on the marketplace that are beginning to become more common as households look to find modern, natural, eco and stylish new ways to furnish their houses.

LONDON, ENGLAND, April 16, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- There is a whole host of green alternatives on the marketplace that are beginning to become more common as households look to find modern, natural, eco and stylish new ways to furnish their houses. There are eco sofas, curtains, furniture; indeed, whatever the product, there is always a green alternative on the market.

Often for financial reasons many people end up simply opting for low-end commercial sofas, furniture, and other home interior products simply because they feel as though they have been priced out of the 'green' market. Take carpets for example: there is a whole host of durable, stylish and environmentally sound new alternatives on the market such as Bamboo, Sea grass, Sisal, and Coir. However all of these new alternatives are right at the top end of the market in terms of pricing, making them out of reach for most buyers.

It however is a common misconception that just because we cannot afford the 'green' option on the marketplace that nothing can be done as a consumer to act responsibly.

Take sofas for example; we may not be able to afford the latest soy foam couch sofa but maybe we can do some research and choose the sofa that uses natural instead of commercial cotton, or legs from recycled steel. It is the same with our carpet choice; maybe we cannot afford to kit our house out with Sea grass but maybe we can use non-chemical based glues throughout the fitting process or try and find a sofa that uses biodegradable materials. The effort you go to in order to ensure that you dispose of your old sofa or carpet in the right way is likely to greatly outweigh buying the latest green product on the market.

As is the case with all purchasing decisions, they all make a difference to the farmers, manufacturers, and businesses that are behind them. If you buy commercial cotton you are supporting an unsustainable and harmful farming technique, whereas if you buy naturally farmed cotton you are supporting sustainable processes and pushing the market in the right direction.

It is important to realise that the companies you buy from and the purchases you make will influence future decisions. It may be that the one thousand pounds you spent on eco products is the decisive factor that makes a sofa brand introduce a new eco range.
