A 25-year veteran of the dental profession, Dr. Gracia Bautista Cua has drawn from her professional background and various vocational experiences in pediatric dentistry, orthodontics and education. As a private practitioner, she provides personalized orthodontic care for a variety of ethnic groups. Dr. Cua is a Chinese-Filipino and is fluent in English, Tagalog and Chinese. Her patients have shown gratitude for her incredibly gentle and compassionate orthodontic care — appreciation for which she is especially proud.
Dr. Cua is also a respected educator. She is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of the Pacific, Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco, Calif. Dr. Cua also taught part-time at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Mass. as well as at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine as an assistant clinical professor. While in Boston, she was a private practitioner for over 10 years.
Dr. Cua is a certified orthodontist and completed orthodontic training at Howard University, College of Dentistry in Washington, D.C. She holds the degree of doctor of dental medicine and a master of science in pediatric dentistry from Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Mass. Active in her community, Dr. Cua's fervor for her profession has been influenced by relatives who have their own flourishing careers in healthcare. Additionally, her own sincere desire to help people has served as a motivating force in her professional career. She sits on the board of advisors of The CDA Foundation. Dr. Cua is a driving force behind San Mateo County Dental Society's (SMCDS) "GIVE KIDS A SMILE EVENT." She was instrumental in launching the event and has managed it since 2003 with the support of the San Mateo County Health Services Agency, Dental Department. The event's objective is to provide free dental services to children of low-income families who do not have access to dental care. Dr. Cua has also generously provided numerous dental screenings, gratis, to pre-school children in an effort to jump start their oral healthcare regimen. This is her way of assisting parents to comply with a California law (Education Code Sec. 49452.8), which states, "Your child must have a dental check-up by 31 May of his/her first year in public school."
Dr. Cua has received numerous awards, commendations and certificates of appreciation. In 2004, she received the Distinguished Service Award from San Mateo County. The children of San Mateo County presented her with a plaque of recognition in 2005, and in 2006 she accepted a certificate of recognition from the Health Department of San Mateo County. That same year, she obtained a certificate of appreciation for pro bono services for the "GIVE KIDS A SMILE EVENT." The following year, in 2007, the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County presented her with a certificate of appreciation. As is president in 2007, the San Mateo Dental Society presented Dr. Cua with a plaque of appreciation in 2008. Also in 2008, the Filipino Dental Practitioners of California honored her with a plaque of appreciation for her untiring support of the greater community. In 2010, the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo recognized Dr. Cua's contribution to the dental health of the county's children with a certificate of commendation. The recognition Dr. Cua continues to receive from the community is a testimony to her "giving self."
