The DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System replaces the ball portion of the hip and has a metal stem which fits into the patient's femur. The ASR XL Acetabular System is a concave metal piece which provides a smooth lining for the acetabulum - the concave surface of the pelvis.

Injured hip replacement patients claim that this new design was defective and that the manufacturers knew about it, but put profits over patients by failing to institute the DePuy hip recall sooner.
