DePuy Hip Recall Likely to Spur 1000s of DePuy Hip Lawsuits

SAUSALITO, CA, October 23, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The recent DePuy hip recall has already spurred hundreds of DePuy hip lawsuits alleging that the manufacturer made a defective product and knew about heavy metal toxicity issues, but waited far too long to institute a recall. As a result, thousands of product liability lawsuits are expected to be filed against DePuy Orthopedics and its parent company Johnson & Johnson (J&J).

DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Systems Are Defective

The August 2010 DePuy hip recall of its ASR Hip Resurfacing System and ASR XL Acetabular System has caused countless numbers of injuries to the estimated 93,000 hip replacement patients who have been implanted with one of these systems since 2003.

While previous metal-on-metal hip replacement systems, such as the DePuy Pinnacle Acetabular Cup System, attached using screws, DePuy's recalled systems did not. The DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System replaces the ball portion of the hip and has a metal stem which fits into the patient's femur. The ASR XL Acetabular System is a concave metal piece which provides a smooth lining for the acetabulum - the concave surface of the pelvis.

Injured hip replacement patients claim that this new design was defective and that the manufacturers knew about it, but put profits over patients by failing to institute the DePuy hip recall sooner.

DePuy Hip Lawsuit: Do You Have A Case?

If you were injured in any way due to the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, the ASR XL Acetabular System or the Pinnacle Acetabular Cup System, you may have a DePuy hip lawsuit. Aside from allegations of defective manufacturing, high reported failure rates (12 -13 %) and failure to warn, medical experts say that all DePuy patients are also susceptible to something called heavy metal toxicity due to chromium and cobalt parts rubbing together and resulting in metal debris, or metal ions, being released and entering into the patient's blood stream - which can be very dangerous.

Although these metal-on-metal medical devices were supposed to be the best, they seem to be anything but that - forcing patients to undergo additional costly, painful and expensive hip replacement revision surgeries.
