Breast Augmentation and Pregnancy/Breastfeeding

Women considering breast augmentation often want to know how the procedure will affect pregnancy and breastfeeding later in life or how pregnancy and breast feeding will affect their breasts with implants.

DENVER, CO, December 03, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Women considering breast augmentation often want to know how the procedure will affect pregnancy and breastfeeding later in life or how pregnancy and breast feeding will affect their breasts with implants. It is safe to have breast augmentation before pregnancy, but there are some things you need to consider. The decision to have breast augmentation before or after bearing children is a very personal one.

Breast Implants Are Safe

Having breast implants does not create a danger for your baby. They do not interfere with your ability to become pregnant. Pregnancy and breastfeeding do not affect or damage your implants in any way.

Breastfeeding after Breast Augmentation

Most women can breastfeed after breast enlargement surgery, but there is a chance that you could have problems.

Some women develop a large amount of scar tissue inside of their breasts after breast augmentation. This can reduce the volume of milk produced and it can be painful when your breasts fill with milk. There are techniques that you can learn to work around this problem and nurse normally.

Most types of breast augmentation incisions are safe and carry little to no risk of causing problems with breastfeeding. However, about 20% of women who choose peri-areolar incision have problems with breastfeeding. The advantage of the peri-areolar incision is that it hides the scar in the outer edge of the darker skin around the nipple (areola). In the process, milk ducts can be severed or damaged. The nerves that trigger the milk let-down reflex can also be damaged.

Your Breasts after Pregnancy

Pregnancy and breast feeding will affect your breasts with or without breast implants. Neither will harm the implants.

During pregnancy your breasts will enlarge. After pregnancy they will shrink. They may go back to their normal size or they may be smaller than they were before. This growing and shrinking stretches the skin. Some women have very healthy and elastic skin that goes back to normal. Others experience minor or severe sagging, requiring breast lift surgery.

Choosing Breast Augmentation Now or Later

Deciding when to have breast augmentation is a very personal choice that no one else can make for you.

If you are planning to get pregnant in the very near future, most cosmetic surgeons will recommend postponing your procedure until after you have recovered from childbirth and finish breastfeeding. You do not want to put your body through the stress of pregnancy and breast surgery recovery at the same time. Your body will go through radical changes during pregnancy. After pregnancy, you and your cosmetic surgeon can work together to decide which procedures will help you achieve your goals and reclaim your body. You may even opt for a breast lift.

If you think you may want to have children later down the road, and you feel that breast augmentation will make you happy and improve your life, there is no reason to put it off.
