The Lincoln Highway was built beginning in 1913, running across the US from New York to the West Coast, using only private funding. The route was named in tribute to Abraham Lincoln. At that time, there was no memorial to the fallen former president. Mansfield, Ohio quickly became one of the more famous stops for the many cars traveling the Lincoln highway.
