Over 45s Avoid Looking in the Mirror

Brits stop looking at their reflection once they hit their mid-40s.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, November 16, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Brits stop looking at their reflection once they hit their mid-40s.

- Only 9% Brits aged 45 and over check their reflection up to ten times a day compared to 51% of youngsters aged 18-24
- Females are two times more likely to sneak a peek in the mirror than males
- Inhabitants of Essex and Yorkshire are most vain
- Bottle blondes are more likely to check their mirror image

A poll of 3000 Brits of all ages shows that British adults check their mirror image 10 times every day - until they reach the age of 45 years old.

According to the new national report by cosmetic surgery group Transform, over half (51%) of 18-24 year olds take a good look at themselves in the mirror up to ten times every single day.

However, it is not only young adults who are obsessed with their looks as the survey shows 44% of 25-34 year olds check their appearance up to 10 times a day. Mirror usage then drops slightly between the ages of 35-44 with around 33% of Brits admiring their reflection up to 10 times a day.

Interestingly, the report shows that when British adults hit 45-years they are fearful of looking in the mirror as "it is not nice to see yourself age". Less than one in 10 Brits ages 45-54 look at their reflection 10 times a day and more than a quarter of those aged 45 admit they don't like the way they look.

36% of 45-54 year olds only look at themselves up to 5 times a day and 16% of that age group only check their mirror-image once a day.

The poll also shows that people own less mirrors as they get older. Brits aged over 45 have between two and five mirrors at home whereas the younger generation have five or more. Incredibly 21% of 18-24 year old have 10 mirrors or more spread through their home.

It might not come as a surprise, but British women are twice as likely to check themselves out as men - by looking at their reflections in shops windows. What's more, almost a third of young women (32%) dread getting older compared to just 12% of men.

The study by Transform also reveals that people living in Essex, the South-East and Yorkshire are the most concerned about their looks and are likely to look in the mirror up to 10 times a day. Inhabitants of Northern Ireland are the least vein and are the least likely to be obsessed with their mirror-image.

The report also reveals that it is most common for blondes to look in the mirror and bottled blondes are the worst culprits. People with grey hair are four time less likely to look in the mirror that those with dyed blonde hair.

Transform spokesperson Shami Thomas said: "Britain loves its mirrors - at least until we reach 45-years-old.

"Our research proves that once we hit our mid-40s we are far less likely to want to see what age and time has done to our faces and bodies.

"It's interesting to learn that women with dyed blonde hair are four times as likely to check themselves out in their mirrors at home (or in shop windows) as those with grey hair.

"We don't like what the ageing process does to us and by the time we reach 45 we are no longer, as far as most are concerned, looking our best. Those pesky mirrors just remind us that we're not getting any younger and so we tend to look into them far less."
