Correction of Breast Asymmetry

Very few women are blessed with perfectly symmetrical breasts. In fact, breast asymmetry is more common than you might think.

GOLDEN, CO, March 22, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Very few women are blessed with perfectly symmetrical breasts. In fact, breast asymmetry is more common than you might think. Approximately 10% of women have one breast that is significantly different in size or shape from the other. And as you age, this asymmetry may become more pronounced as the smaller breast remains relatively flat while the larger one grows in size due to pregnancy or weight fluctuations. Ultimately, this can increase sagging issues in the larger breast, further accentuating the asymmetry you experience.

If you are self conscious or embarrassed about your breast asymmetry, you may want to consider breast surgery to correct the condition. A highly skilled board certified plastic surgeon can perform a number of procedures to restore symmetry to your breasts so that you can feel more comfortable in workout clothes, on the beach, or on hot, steamy nights in the bedroom.

Causes of Breast Asymmetry

There are a number of reasons why you may have asymmetrical breasts:

- Uneven development during adolescence
- Changes to your breasts during pregnancy and breastfeeding
- A medical condition that causes one breast to shrink
- Virginal hypertrophy - a condition marked by sudden, extreme growth of one breast as a teenager
- Uneven breast shrinkage as you age
- Significant fluctuations in weight
- Poor results from a previous breast augmentation procedure
- Mastitis - a breast infection occurring when you breastfeed
- Mastectomy for the treatment of breast cancer

Options to Correct Breast Asymmetry

There are two main options to correct breast asymmetry:

- Breast augmentation
- Breast reduction

Breast augmentation is an excellent way to correct breast asymmetry. Your plastic surgeon can place breast implants in one or both of your breasts to even out their size and shape. In many instances, two different sized breast implants may be required to achieve your desired results.

In some cases, a breast lift may be performed in conjunction with breast augmentation for enhanced results. A breast lift will help address sagging issues by lifting the breast tissue and repositioning the nipple. The end result is a perkier, more youthful breast appearance.

If you prefer to reduce the size of your larger breast to match your smaller one, then breast reduction is an excellent option to achieve your aesthetic goals. In cases of severe breast asymmetry, you may even want to consider breast reduction for the larger breast while placing a breast implant in the smaller one.

At your initial consultation, you should discuss your aesthetic goals with your plastic surgeon in great detail to give him a clear picture of what you would like to achieve from your procedure. This will help ensure satisfaction with your results.
