The primary focus of general dentistry is the prevention of common oral health issues, but you can't solely rely on your dentist to keep your teeth and gums clean. You must take responsibility at home as well.
Preventative Dentistry at Home
Preventing tooth decay and gum disease starts with a daily oral hygiene routine. Your routine should include:
- Brushing your teeth after every meal
- Flossing at least once a day, but preferably morning and night
Brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste and a soft bristled toothbrush. The soft bristles will help prevent unnecessary tooth erosion while the fluoride in the toothpaste strengthens your teeth and helps fight decay.
Flossing should be done prior to brushing. When you floss, plaque and food particles are knocked loose from in between your teeth. Brushing after these particles have been knocked loose will help ensure proper removal.
Visit Your Dentist
Your at-home routine is necessary, but not enough to prevent all oral health problems. The largest weapon in your preventativedentistry arsenal is biannual visits to your dentist for professional cleanings and examinations.
Your dentist will be able to remove plaque that has hardened into tartar as well as address any other hygiene issues. The examination at these visits helps detect potential problems early on, allowing your dentist to treat small problems before they become serious issues.
Even the best at-home routine will prove insufficient at keeping your teeth and gums as healthy as possible. Visiting your dentist every six months is necessary to maintain a happy, healthy smile for a lifetime.
