Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon Announces New Breast Implant Option

A new type of cohesive silicone implants is now available for women considering breast augmentation and breast reconstruction.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA, August 14, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The FDA has approved a third type of highly cohesive silicone gel implant, nicknamed the "gummy bear" breast implant. MENTOR's MemoryShape Breast Implants, formerly known as CPG implants, are available for women considering cosmetic surgery for breast augmentation or reconstruction, along with Sientra's anatomically shaped implants and Allergan's Natrelle 410. Dr. David N. Sayah (http://www.davidsayah.com/), a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, says this offers more opportunities for women to achieve the look they want.

"Women are thrilled to finally have another option for augmentation," says Dr. Sayah, a breast augmentation specialist in Beverly Hills. "Many of my patients think the gummy bear implants are better than either saline implants or other silicone implant types."

The MemoryShape implants, like similar models of cohesive gel implants, are approved for use in women seeking augmentation who are age 22 or older, and are approved for use in reconstructive surgery for women of any age. Although the firmer silicone gel implants have been used popularly throughout Europe and South America for several years, they have not been available within the United States until recently.

Approval for the implants was based on a study conducted over the course of six years that involved nearly 1,000 women. Results of the study showed the implants were both safe and effective, without any higher rates of complications than other implants currently available for use in augmentation. The manufacturers of all three types of cohesive gel implants must continue conducting post-approval studies for the next several years to rule out the possibility of long-term complications.

"In addition to giving women another option for cosmetic breast augmentation, form-stable silicone gel implants offer improved results for women requiring reconstructive surgery following a single or double mastectomy," explains Dr. Sayah. "Reconstructive surgery rests heavily on the shape and style of the implant, since there's so little natural breast tissue to work with. My Beverly Hills cosmetic surgery practice provides both cosmetic and reconstructive breast procedures, and the new cohesive gel implants really deliver beautiful final results that look and feel more like a natural breast."

The anatomical shape of the gummy bear implants provide a final profile that's more subtle than that which is available from the round implants in use today. For women who want end results that are more dramatic, with fullness in the upper pole of the breast, round saline or silicone implants may be the better option.

"Every woman is different, so not all implants will work for each surgery," says Dr. Sayah. "The best plastic surgeons will focus on bringing out the best in your body, not in choosing a one-size-fits-all approach or getting hung up on a specific implant type."
