Training Pant Specialists, Stork Nest, Offer Tips for Halloween Safety for Your Small Children

Introducing your little one to Halloween can be lots of fun and create memories you will both cherish forever. However, small children require special safety precautions. Stork Nest presents some tips to make your toddler's holiday safe.

ATLANTA, GA, October 31, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Online discount diaper retailer, Stork Nest, knows that introducing your toddler to Halloween can be a lot of fun. However, there are special safety concerns for toddlers that you may no longer have to worry about with your older children.

Costume Safety
- Make sure that costumes, including masks, wigs, and other accessories, are fire resistant. This is a concern for kids of all ages, but toddlers are more likely to be attracted to lit pumpkins and other fire hazards.

- Toddlers are still mastering the art of walking, so be sure that your little one's costume doesn't provide a tripping hazard. Be sure that it is not so long that he or she will step or trip on it.

- If there is a possibility that you will be out after dark, add a few strips of reflective tape to the costume and candy bag to make your little one visible to you and others. More than twice as many children are hit by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year.

- Sew or iron a tag with your child's name and phone number to the costume. You don't expect to get separated, but it can happen.

- Don't forget to put your little one in a clean, absorbent pair of training pants or Fisher-Price Happy Nights diapers to make sure that he or she stays dry and comfortable throughout the Halloween excursion.

Props, Accessories, and Masks
- Even plastic items like swords, wands, badges, crowns and other accessories can cause injury if a little one falls on it. Purchase or make foam props, or stuff them with cloth or paper.

- Toddlers are generally safer with non-toxic make-up than masks. They can have difficulty seeing and breathing in masks--particularly full-face ones.

Candy Safety
Everyone knows that inspecting any child's candy haul before they dig in is mandatory. However, be careful with the candy you hand out also, as your toddler is likely to grab some. Avoid hard candy, lollipops, Tootsie Rolls, nuts, popcorn, raisins, and items that could be a choking hazard. If your toddler receives any of these, remove or replace them with something else when you get home.

Safety at Home on Halloween Night
Once you and your little one are back home, there are still safety considerations. Toddlers want to go to the door to see trick-or-treaters' costumes. Keep them a safe distance from the door so that their hands don't get stuck as you're closing it. You also don't want them slipping outside to join the fun. Keep them occupied during the evening until it is bedtime.

According to Nicole Bruck, Marketing Development Supervisor for Stork Nest, "We know that new parents can be nervous about introducing their children to Halloween, but with a few simple precautions, it can be completely safe and lots of fun for parents and children alike."
