NEW YORK, NY, December 20, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Lisa Liberatore, a Board Certified Otolaryngologist of Lexington ENT in Manhattan is excited to announce the availability of rhinoplasty procedures at the practice. While Rhinoplasty is sometimes performed for cosmetic reasons to change the shape or appearance of the nose, there are medical reasons for rhinoplasty as well.

The anatomy of the nose and sinuses varies greatly between individuals. Sometimes the internal structures inside the nose can affect the way a person breathes and cause serious health issues such as chronic sinus infections, headaches, snoring or sleep apnea.

A deviated septum is a very common cause of nasal obstruction that can be corrected by a surgical procedure called septoplasty. During septoplasty the bone and cartridge around the septum is trimmed to make the space between the nostrils more even. Septoplasty is sometimes done in conjunction with Manhattan rhinoplasty.

Enlarged turbinates also cause nasal obstruction. Turbinates are tissues that provide humidity to the air that passes through your nose. Sometimes because of allergies or genetic factors the turbinates become chronically inflamed, causing post nasal drip and difficulty breathing through the nose. Manhattan ENT Dr. Liberatore can assess problems with the turbinates and educate you on a surgery called turbinate reduction, which can be performed in conjunction with both septoplasty and rhinoplasty.

When it comes to Manhattan rhinoplasty, there are essentially two ways to perform the surgery: Open or closed. Open rhinoplasty, also called an external rhinoplasty, involves making a small incision at the bottom of the exterior of the septum and then folding the skin back, allowing the surgeon to see all of the inner workings of the nasal framework.

A closed rhinoplasty, sometimes referred to as an endonasal rhinoplasty, does not require any exterior incisions as all work is performed through the nostril openings. The type of rhinoplasty your Manhattan ENT chooses depends on the individual anatomy of the patient as well as the reason for the procedure.

"The goal of rhinoplasty is to look like you but without any features that distract from your most beautiful self, and with the best functional result, as well. Rhinoplasty allows us to create a harmonious and optimally breathing nose so you can live your life without complications," said Dr. Liberatore, an ENT in Manhattan.
