VANCOUVER, WA, May 22, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- According to a new study conducted at St. Michael's Hospital, many children aren't receiving the early oral care that most dental professionals recommend. In a recent survey of over 2,500 children aged four years or younger, less than one percent of participants had received any dental care by the time they had their first birthday. Dentists typically recommend children to see a dentist no later than six months after they start teething, but in Toronto, it seems that advice has gone largely ignored.

In an age where the average daily intake of sweetened beverages increases each day, it has become even more vital that children are exposed to quality dental care. The study, conducted by St. Michael's researcher Dr. Jonathon Maguire, found that of children who had visited a dentist, twenty-four percent had one or more cavities. However, Dr. Maguire also revealed that previous studies have shown children who receive preventative dental care in the first year of life are less likely to develop tooth and gum diseases in the future.

This is not an isolated case: lack of dental care is a prevalent problem in America, too. A 2010 study revealed that twenty-five percent of children in the state of California had never visited a dentist. Ensuring that children see a dentist before they are a year old is primarily beneficial for the child, but also for the parents, as dentists are the most valuable resource for dental health education and can assist parents in best providing for their child's oral health.
