Ms. Petrola has been honored for her work as a teacher with numerous awards and accolades

MOUNT SINAI, NY, March 04, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Renee Petrola, Retired Teacher of Mount Sinai School District has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in education.

Prior to her retirement, Ms. Petrola spent 43 years as a teacher at Mount Sinai School District, where she primarily taught literature and writing. Each day, she was responsible for managing an intensive creative and research writing program, teaching four classes in writing and a reading literature program to sixth-grade students; encouraging students to become involved in competitive writing and poetry contests, utilizing computers, desktop publishing and smart boards, conducting conferences with three other teachers and consulting with special education teachers.

Ms. Petrola is 100 credits past a master's degree. She has worked as a conflict mediator and has experience as a counselor. She taught swimming lessons and also taught writing classes; two of her students placed first for writing an anthology in the Walt Whitman poetry contest. She was involved in the local parent-teacher association and was one of four pioneer teachers working in an outdoor learning laboratory with fifth-grade students studying the impact of humankind upon the environment.

Ms. Petrola's first book, "Woman on the Edge of Time," was self-published, Her second book, "Primitive Dancer," was published by Book Stand Publishing, and her third book, "The Healing Tree," is soon to be published by Book Stand Publishing.

Looking back, Ms. Petrola attributes her success to her passion, listening and observational skills. She became involved in her profession because of the inspiration she received from her mother, Phyllis Petrola, who was also an elementary teacher, and her experience as a babysitter. The highlight of her career was being recognized for her participation in the Walt Whitman Poetry Contest. She also accompanied her principal to Washington DC to receive a Blue Ribbon Award, which is given to schools cited for exemplary high performance by the U.S. Department of Education. The teachers at her school had a brick installed at The Walt Whitman Walkway.

Ms. Petrola received a master's degree in liberal studies from Stony Brook University in 1974. She maintains affiliation with the Mount Sinai Teachers Association, the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers. In her spare time, Ms. Petrola enjoys designing jewelry, writing, swimming and kayaking. In years to come, Ms. Petrola would like to continue to write and publish more books.
