Professor and occupational therapist whose career has spanned more than 40 years, Dr. Baum is a professor of occupational therapy, neurology, and social work in the Washington University in St. Louis Program in Occupational Therapy, wherein she teaches entry-level courses and several seminars in the rehabilitation and participation science PhD program. She had developed and leads the occupational therapy program that is consistently ranked in the top 2 OT programs in the country. She also conducts research to understand the role of cognitive function to support older adults in managing the complexities of daily life.
Prior to joining the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Baum served in clinical roles as an occupational therapist for the University of Kansas Medical Center and director of occupational therapy for C-HCA, Inc. In 1976, she began working as director of clinical services and occupational therapy in the School of Medicine, thus inspiring her doctoral studies and leading to her appointment as director of the Program in Occupational Therapy in 1988. Since that time, Dr. Baum has mentored students conducting research and working in her laboratory, and has been involved in the development of several rehabilitation projects. From 2007 to 2012, she served as a visiting professor at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, where she collaborated with colleagues on initiatives to investigate stroke services and policies.
In addition to her academic commitments, Dr. Baum has served on several research panels and advisory committees, including those of the American Occupational Therapy Association, the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research, and The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis. She has served as a member of the board of directors of the American Occupational Therapy Foundation, as well as chair of its research commission, and a former president of the American Occupational Therapy Association.
Dr. Baum has been integral in elevating Washington University in St. Louis' occupational therapy program to its current status through her research, teaching, and policy work. As part of a National Institutes of Health committee, she helped draft a rehabilitation plan for reached Congress. In addition to numerous peer-reviewed articles in scholarly journals, Dr. Baum has contributed chapters to reference books and textbooks. She is the recipient of the Outstanding St. Louis Scientist Leadership Award from the Academy of Science of St. Louis, the Stanley J. Coulter Lecture Award from the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, and the Presidents' Commendation Award from American Occupational Therapy Association.
Dr. Baum earned a Bachelor of Science from The University of Kansas, a Master of Arts from Webster College, and a PhD from Washington University in St. Louis, as well as an honorary doctorate from the University of Haifa. She has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
