A pathologist and director of anatomic pathology at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center from 1989 until his retirement in 2014, Dr. Slavin has been a professor emeritus at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston since 1989, having served as a professor of pathology for 12 years. Other roles he held include director of surgical pathology at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston from 1977 to 1989, associate chief of pathology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Baltimore City Hospitals from 1965 to 1977, associate professor of pathology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine from 1965 to 1977, and senior assistant surgeon for the U.S. Public Health Service's Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in Hiroshima, Japan from 1963 to 1965.

A fellow of the College of American Pathologists, Dr. Slavin was born in New York to Irving and Celia Slavin. He received his undergraduate degree from New York University before pursuing his Doctor of Medicine in Belgium at Ghent University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. He completed a residency in pathology at John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Baltimore City Hospitals, and was a senior resident in surgical pathology at Toronto General Hospital. He also completed an internship at Maimonides Medical Center during his medical training.

Dr. Slavin is recognized for describing segmental arterial mediolysis as a distinct clinical entity, named it and uncovered its cause. He also published the original papers on the pathology of bone marrow transplantation and human graft versus host reaction, and wrote the first papers about the pathology of high dose and sequential chemotherapy and seat belt caused intestinal injuries. He has also contributed numerous scientific papers to medical journals.

A member of the Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists and United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, Dr. Slavin is a longtime Eagle Scout. The father of Eric and Jason, and the grandfather of Nicole and Noah, he was married to his wife Joan until her passing. He enjoys music and gardening in his free time. He has been cited in the 66th edition of Who's Who in America.
