ELYRIA, OH, December 13, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Judy Skillicorn with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Skillicorn celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Having officially retired from education in 2004, Ms. Skillicorn spent 14 years as the coordinator of the gifted program at the Educational Service Center of Lorain County, Elyria, OH beginning in 1990. As such she worked with teachers of the gifted, did testing of students for the program, and helped plan educational opportunities for students such as Independent Study Fair, Environmental Day in conjunction with the Lorain County Metro Parks, Math Mania, and Mock Trials with local lawyers and judges participating. Since that time, she was a caseworker for U.S. Congressman Sherrod Brown in 2005; then served as office manager in his U.S. Senate Campaign Headquarters in 2006; and then as caseworker for U. S. Senator Sherrod Brown handling constituent issues in education, immigration, banking, and mortgages immediately before the financial crisis hit from 2006-2009.
Ms. Skillicorn taught for more than 25 years in Ohio. She taught sixth grade students at Windermere Elementary School in Upper Arlington, OH, and she was an educator for two different churches in Ohio. She taught gifted students in grades 4-8 at Clearview Local Schools in Lorain, OH from 1985 to 1990, and was an adjunct faculty member at Ashland University in Ashland, OH. She also spent several years as a private tutor and was a planning director for a proposed County-Wide School of Integrated Arts, Lorain County Education Service Center, in Elyria. Other roles she has held include substitute in grades K-12 as well as long-term sub teaching History at Lake Ridge Academy in North Ridgeville, OH (1984-1997), adjunct faculty for Lorain County Community College (1998-1999) teaching Developmental English and Reading; adjunct faculty for Ashland University (1997-2003), and Director of the Golden Crescent Montessori Pre-School for three locations in Lorain County, OH (1981-1982). Furthermore, she served as grants reader for The Ohio Arts Council for Arts Basic to Education in 1997 and for the State of Ohio grant for community schools in 1998. Throughout the course of her career, she taught or substitute taught in every grade from pre-school through graduate school.
Ms. Skillicorn served on a number of committees, and she was the co-chair of the Page to Stage Arts Program with the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram. Additionally, she founded the Arts Connected Teaching Pilot Program for four different school districts, founded Arts Advocacy of Lorain County, and served as board member of Young Audiences of Cleveland (1996-2001), and on the Global Issues Board in the Greater Cleveland area (1995-1997). In 1995, she was in the 1995 Leadership Lorain County Class. A longtime member of several professional organizations, she also served as vice-president and secretary-treasurer and nominating committee member of the Lorain County Elementary School Administrators. She was on the publication committee of the Writing Teachers Network and was treasurer and vice president of the North Central Consortium for the Gifted.
One of the highlights of Ms. Skillicorn's career was the educational partnership she established with the National Association of College Stores (NACS/NACSCORP). The organization funded the Lorain County Young Authors Program and printed teacher handbooks. Every teacher in the county that participated would receive one. More than 10,000 students in the county participated and wrote books during the first year of the program alone. Ms. Skillicorn notably authored the "Young Authors Handbook" for 13 years between 1991 and 2004. As a culmination, 1000 students participated in a Young Authors Conference with a famous children's author speaking about writing and creating. The evening before, an Open House was held where all the children's books they had written were on display. She is a new member this year of AAUW.
Locally involved on the board of directors of the Lorain County Sacred Landmarks Initiative (2003-2006) and as the arts programming coordinator and board of directors of the Lorain County Sacred Landmarks Initiative in 2003, Ms. Skillicorn has been active in her community for more than 30 years. More recently, she served on the board of trustees of the First Congregational Church in Elyria from 2015 to 2018 and as an outreach board member from 2009 to 2011. She was also a board member for the Lorain County Dental Wives DENTAL group from 1972-2017 and was a board member of the Elyria Health Department from 1999-2007. She implemented her church's participation in Family Promise; housing and feeding homeless women and children four times a year for eight years.
A Jennings Scholar Teacher through the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation from 1990 to 1991 and the recipient of a Bedford Parent Teacher Association Scholarship for Teachers, Ms. Skillicorn also received the Lorain County Award for educational service at the Afro-American Festival in 1998. She has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who of American Women. She graduated from Bedford High School in Bedford, OH, holds a BS in Education from Ohio State University, an MEd from Cleveland State University, and completed postgraduate coursework at Ashland University.
Very fond of world travel, Ms. Skillicorn also loves attending plays and local art events and she is working on family genealogy for her and her husband's families dating back 12 generations. Married to Robert Charles Skillicorn, whom she met in 8th grade, since 1965, she is the proud mother of three children and grandmother of five.
