Dr. Thomas Arthur Currey is an elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Currey, a longtime practicing ophthalmologist, has been in private practice in Memphis, TN, since 1965. He has also been teaching at the University of Tennessee as an assistant clinical instructor of ophthalmology since 1965 and as an associate instructor of ophthalmology in the department of family practice since 1990.

Enjoying the field immensely, Dr. Currey held an appointment as a staff member at St. Francis Hospital for 45 wonderful years. Taken on board in 1965, he later retired from the hospital in 2010. During his tenure, he notably served as president of the medical staff during 1985. He also served in the same role as president at St. Joseph's Hospital in 1970.

During his career, Dr. Currey studied herpes zoster ophthalmicus, which is the reactivation of a varicella-zoster virus infection (shingles) involving the eye. He also did extensive work with the use of stellate ganglion blocks, which is an injection of a local anesthetic to block the sympathetic nerves located on either side of the voice box in the neck, with antifungals and steroids. He published an article in the American Journal of Ophthalmology based on his work.

Dr. Currey is an elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a past president of the Tennessee Academy of Ophthalmology, past vice president of the Tennessee Medical Association, and past president, secretary, head of the business bureau and treasurer of the Memphis and Shelby County Medical Society.

Completing his undergraduate work at the University of Mississippi in 1955, Dr. Currey then earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Tennessee in 1958. He completed his internship at the City of Memphis Hospitals from 1958 to 1959, followed by residency work in ophthalmology at the University of Tennessee from 1962 to 1965. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Married since 1959 to Carol Ann Clabough, Dr. Currey has two children. His son Thomas Jr. is an optometrist, and his other son Russell holds an MBA in finance. He also has six grandchildren. In his free time, Dr. Currey enjoys taking photography, watching sports and traveling.
