With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Pilkerton has been recognized as professor emeritus of Georgetown University since 2008 and the co-founder of the Retina Group of Washington since 1982. Prior to his retirement, he was a professor at the Georgetown University Medical Center from 1978 to 2008, an associate professor from 1971 to 1978, and an assistant professor from 1965 to 1970.
Dr. Pilkerton began his career as a student at Georgetown University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1956. He continued his studies with the university, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1960. He held an internship with the University of Pittsburgh in 1961. He then returned to the Georgetown University Medical Center for a residency in ophthalmology from 1961 to 1964, and he held a fellowship in retinal surgery with Wills Eye Hospital from 1964 to 1965. Dr. Pilkerton is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Pilkerton has been an active leader in his community. A fellow and councilor of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons, he is a member of the Retina Society of the United States, the Retina Group of Washington, the American Society of Retina Specialists and the Prevention of Blindness Society. A United States Army veteran, Dr. Pilkerton has held a number of positions with the Washington VA Hospital, including chief of ophthalmology and chair of ophthalmology consultants.
Throughout his career, Dr. Pilkerton has been honored for his achievements. He has been named a Knight of Malta, a Knight Commander of the Holy Sepulcher, one of America's Top Ophthalmologists, and one of America's Best Doctors. He received a Hagerty Award from the North Virginia Academy of Ophthalmology and a Professional Service Award from the Prevention of Blindness Society. Dr. Pilkerton has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
