Clark M. Zlotchew, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

An award-winning author and translator, Dr. Clark M. Zlotchew has published 17 fiction and non-fiction books, two of which are thriller novels.

Now retired from a tenured position at the State University of New York (SUNY)—Fredonia, Dr. Zlotchew, through having earned distinction in teaching, scholarship and service to the profession and community, was promoted to the position of SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor, the highest honor which the State University of New York bestows on a faculty member. His field, in which he is now Emeritus, is of Latin-American and Spanish literature, as well as the Spanish language and linguistics. Comments of his students and peers testify to his superior teaching service, commitment and growth, as well as academic standards and requirements. Affiliated with the State University of New York (Geneseo, then Fredonia) from 1970 to 2017, Dr. Zlotchew taught Spanish language and the literature of Spanish-speaking countries, phonetics, creative writing in Spanish and additional related subjects.

During the initial stages of his career, after having been sales/production liaison for the export department of a liquor manufacturer, Dr. Zlotchew held teaching appointments at Norwich University in Vermont as an assistant professor and before that at Dumont High School in New Jersey as a teacher of Spanish. While active at SUNY, he likewise contributed for a year on behalf of the New York State Board of Cooperative Educational Services during 1975 first as teacher then as project coordinator for the Hispanic seasonal workers program spread across Western New York. Likewise, an ardent community advocate, Dr. Zlotchew has served in an instrumental role as a volunteer with the Friendly Kitchen, Dunkirk, for over 25 years, during which he has waited on guests and provided food as a member of his small synagogue. He also served on the board of his local Boy Scouts of America troop.

An award-winning author and translator, Dr. Zlotchew has published 17 fiction and non-fiction books, two of which are thriller novels. Some of his books include "Once Upon A Decade: Tales of the Fifties" in 2010, "Voices of the River Plate: Interviews with Writers of Argentina and Uruguay" in 1995, with a second edition published in 2011, and "Seven Conversations with Jorge Luis Borges" in 1982, whose paperback edition was released in 2010. He has also contributed short fiction to various periodicals, which have been published in both Spanish and English throughout the U.S. and Latin America. Moreover, Dr. Zlotchew has written poetry for national and international literary journals since 2016, and approximately 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals on language, literature and linguistics between 1974 and 2016. His own interview with J.L. Borges, included in his aforementioned "Voices of the River Plate…," has been republished in various professional and literary journals in English and Spanish, and translated into several world languages e.g. Bengali and Mandarin, and have appeared in India and China among other countries.

Dr. Zlotchew attained a Bachelor of Science at New York University in 1957, followed by a Master of Arts in Spanish language and literature at Middlebury College in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Romance Languages and Literatures at SUNY Binghamton in 1974. Throughout the course of his studies, he focused on the literature, linguistics and dialectology of Spain and Latin America. He also studied French literature, historical linguistics and the development of the Romance languages from Latin into modern languages. Prior to entering college, Dr. Zlotchew enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve in 1950 and reached the position of Chief Petty Officer before his honorable discharge in 1969.

To remain aware of developments affecting his field of study, Dr. Zlotchew has been actively engaged with several pertinent organizations. To wit, he is a corresponding member of the Academia Porteña del Lunfardo and a member and past president of the New York State Council on Linguistics. Dr. Zlotchew has also been a member of the Modern Language Association, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, the Northeast Modern Language Association, the International Institute of Literature and Hispanic Culture and Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.

While 14 of Dr. Zlotchew's books deal with his professional fields in Hispanic literature and linguistics, three of his books consist of his own fiction. Before retirement he wrote articles in his professional fields, but since retirement he writes fiction and poetry which have appeared in literary journals across the globe. Acknowledged as a finalist for the Next Generation Indie Book Award in 2011 for his short story collection, Dr. Zlotchew has also received several professional recognitions, including a President's Award in 1988 (Excellence in Teaching) and the Robert W. Kasling Memorial Lecture Award (Excellence in Scholarship) in 1992 from SUNY. In 2016 he was inducted into the Orden de Don Quijote, the highest honor conferred by Sigma Delta Pi, and which recognizes exceptional and meritorious service in Hispanic Scholarship, the teaching of Spanish and promotion of good relations between the Hispanic world and the anglophone countries. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Zlotchew has been showcased in over 15 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the East.
