LAWRENCE, KS, November 19, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert L. Walzel Jr. has been included in the Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Through his formative years, Dr. Walzel thoroughly enjoyed the musical aspects of his education. Exhibiting a natural proficiency in playing multiple instruments, he also recognized the beneficial elements of a musical education on his peers and classmates. Garnering inspiration from these experiences, Dr. Walzel resolved to cultivate a career as a musician and music teacher.

Prior to attaining professional success, Dr. Walzel earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Houston in 1982. He was employed briefly as an orchestral musician in South Africa before returning to Texas. Subsequently, and while performing in classical, jazz, and commercial musical genres with the premiere professional music organizations in Houston, he discovered his passion for teaching. After completing a Master of Music in clarinet performance in 1985 at the University of Houston, he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of North Texas. Over the course of his career, Dr. Walzel has performed or presented master classes in thirty different countries and most of the fifty United States.

For more than a decade, Dr. Walzel served as a faculty member at Texas Tech University and as principal clarinet for the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. He subsequently moved into full-time administration, serving two years as director of the School of Music Sam Houston State University and then in a similar capacity at the University of Utah for almost a decade. Since 2010, Dr. Walzel has served as the founding dean at the University of Kansas School of Music. In this capacity, he oversees academic programs in music, manages a large and high-achieving faculty, leads international collaborations, and pursues philanthropic support for the broad array of music programs at KU.

Dr. Walzel previously served from 2014 to 2019 on the Commission on Accreditation for the National Association of Schools of Music. He is Past President of the International Clarinet Association, having served on the Board of Directors from 1998 to 2008.
