Dr. Shobe is a veteran patent agent and expert in the chemical industry. His remarkable career included working for Cardinal Intellectual Property as an analyst, Joan L. Simunic, Esq., as a patent agent and the Sud-Chemie Corporation Library as a librarian, director and scientific information specialist. Additionally, he spent three years as a postdoctoral research associate, first at Wayne State University between 1994 and 1995 and then at the University of Nebraska from 1996 until 1997. Among his noteworthy qualifications, Dr. Shobe has specialized in performing technical information searches and drafting patent applications, while also maintaining a strong interest in computational chemistry.

Throughout his professional endeavors, Dr. Shobe was most proud of the time he spent with Sud-Chemie. Looking back fondly on the most formative years of his career, he greatly enjoyed collaborating with his assistant, while also overseeing the books and journals and conducting literature searches. Although it was not considered a large library, the impact it left on him certainly was.

He became fascinated by astronomy and then chemistry around the fifth grade when he was able to read some of his parents' textbooks, Dr. Shobe's mother majored in chemistry in college and spent her career as a microbiologist. She was notably responsible for overseeing the logistics of the University of Kansas's microbiology laboratory. Meanwhile, Dr. Shobe's father was a mathematician and teacher at the Indiana Academy.

Apart from his paid positions, Dr. Shobe has been an assistant editor for the Chemistry Information Bulletin, which is published through the American Chemical Society, since 2014. He also contributed to the publication as a writer of the Editor's Corner for some time. Backed by several industry-related organizations in support of his career, Dr. Shobe has been aligned as a member of the American Chemical Society, the Patent Information Users Group, and the National Association of Patent Practitioners. He is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Dr. Shobe was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He later graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School before studying at Washington University in Saint Louis. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and mathematics in 1989. Shortly thereafter, he received a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry at the prestigious Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1994 and a Master of Science in library and information science at the University of Illinois in 1999. Dr. Shobe has been a licensed patent agent through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office since 2005.
