Dr. Maryanoff celebrates nearly five decades of distinction in industrial chemistry and chemical research, with major successes in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. Passionate about science and deeply interested in chemistry since childhood, he pursued independent study in organic chemistry as a high school student before enrolling at Drexel University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1969 and a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry in 1972. Dr. Maryanoff accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University from 1972 until 1974, and began his career as a research scientist for McNeil Laboratories later that year.

Dr. Maryanoff advanced quickly at McNeil Laboratories, earning the position of a principal scientist in 1978. In 1981, he was made a research fellow of McNeil Pharmaceutical's facility in Spring House, Pennsylvania, where he would remain active as a senior research fellow until 1987. Between 1987 and 1990, Dr. Maryanoff served as a senior research fellow of the Janssen Research Foundation, then spent the next decade as a distinguished research fellow in the R.W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute, transferring to Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development in 2002. During this time, he served on the medicinal chemistry study section of the National Institutes of Health and the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund.

Dr. Maryanoff is best known as the inventor of a multibillion-dollar anticonvulsant drug, topiramate, which he considers to be a highlight of his research career. Since 2009, he has been a Visiting Investigator at The Scripps Research Institute-California, a Distinguished Professor at the Baruch S. Blumberg Institute, a principal of the consulting company Maryanoff & Maryanoff LLC, and an associate editor of ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters. Dr. Maryanoff shifted his focus to the beverage industry in 2015 as the chief executive officer and chief science officer of Absolute Palate LLC, a coffee company operating on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Throughout his career, Dr. Maryanoff has been involved with a broad range of academic and industry concerns, including a term as the chair of the Gordon Research Conference on Organic Reactions, organizer/chair of numerous symposia at American Chemical Society national meetings, and membership on the editorial boards of several scientific journals. He has been honored as a Fellow of the American Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is credited with more than 280 published scientific articles and 100 issued U.S. Patents.

Well regarded for his contributions to the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Maryanoff is the recipient of dozens of awards, including: two Johnson & Johnson Philip B. Hofmann Research Awards; a Johnson Medal; and from the American Chemical Society a 2000 Heroes of Chemistry Award, a 2003 Industrial Chemistry Award, a 2009 Smissman Award, a 2013 Hershberg Award, and election to the Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame. Outside of his vocational circles, he is married to his loving wife, Cynthia. In his leisure time, Dr. Maryanoff enjoys gardening and curating his personal wine collection.
